This volume offers a sequence of prayers that enable congregations to benefit from a full and sustained participation in the liturgy. The Call to Worship concentrates on the psalm for the day. The Prayer of Praise and Adoration puts in narrative form some of the thoughts contained in the psalm. The Litany of Confession or Affirmation draws its inspiration from the epistle, while the Prayer of Dedication looks to thoughts contained in the Gospel lesson. Often the Prayer of Thanksgiving and Supplication will seek out themes from the Old Testament lesson. In this way the congregation is encouraged to repsond to the scriptural themes in a variety of ways, each of which serves to deepen and enhance the hearing of God's word.
In this book, James G. Kirk provides meditations to help Christians celebrate Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany. After a synopsis of the recommended Bible passage, there is a reflection, written in understandable language with real-life examples, which provide insight and direction for making the day more meaningful. A closing prayer follows. Based on Scripture readings from the lectionary, these meditations can be read by individuals or used with a group.
The forty days of Lent represent a special time of preparation. James G. Kirk's meditations are meant to help Christians use this time well. Based on Scripture readings from the lectionary, his meditations lead individuals to center their attention on the Easter mystery. Daily, a biblical theme such as mercy, forgiveness, or judgment is highlighted and each day's meditation concludes with a prayer. Classic illustrations by Virgil Solis, a contemporary of Martin Luther King, enhance the volume.
