This pictorial directory of "Confederate Generals of the War of
Northern Aggression" has been made available by the William Kenyon
Australasian Confederates, Camp 2160, of the Sons of Confederate
Veterans, Inc; located in Australia. It is an ongoing project to
compile a complete pictorial directory of all Confederate Generals
who participated in that unholy war; many who have long been
forgotten. It is our hope that through this project all the South's
Confederate Generals will again be remembered; not just the few
along with General Robert E. Lee. All deserve to be remembered for
the sacrifice they made in defending the south from Lincoln's
illegal war.
This is a new release of the original 1924 edition.
Fort Harllee was established and constructed at latitude 79 deg. 50
min., longitude 81 deg. 40 min., on March 18, 1835 under the
direction of Major William W. Harl1ee of the South Carolina
Volunteers, serving in Florida. He had visited the site the
previous year and had erected picket walls with two substantial
blockhouses, one on each diagonal comer. When it was built it was
therefore named in his honor. He also served as its first
commander. Fort Harllee was built primarily for the protection of
early settlers in the area from marauding Seminoles and situated
between Garey's Ferry at Middleburg and Newnansville, which would
later become Alachua's first county seat. It was located on the
north bank of the Santa Fe River at a point where the Black Creek
to Newnansville Road crossed the river; just south of Hampton's
Lake. When an alarm was given of impending Indian attack, settlers
would all gather in and around the fort for protection.
Indian artifact collecting is a hobby enjoyed by thousands of
people and it goes a long way in helping to preserve artifacts from
history that might never be found otherwise. It is illegal to dig
for artifacts without a landowner's permission, or on state-owned
and controlled lands or submerged lands. The Florida Division of
Historical Resources, Bureau of Archaeological Research does have
the ability to grant permission to conduct archaeological
investigations: but it is seldom done except for professionals. To
obtain an archaeological research permit, you or someone in your
organization must have professional archaeological expertise that
meets the "Qualifications for Recognition as a Professional
Archaeologist' of the Register of Professional Archaeologists. In
spite of all this, you can use the accompanying copies of a Florida
Site File form and use it to your advantage; even if only providing
a history of and improving the value of a collection.
The St Helena Penal Establishment was situated on a small Island in
Moreton Bay, some 5 km from the mouth of the Brisbane River,
covered approximately 88 hectares above the high water line and was
one of the loveliest islands in the bay. The elevated tableland on
which the prison was built looked like a large rugged block of ruby
and emerald rising out of the sea. Its steep chocolate brown
patches of rich soil, bordered with green fields of cultivation and
bases of grass and shimmering sand provided a striking first
picture of the island. It has had a fascinating history from the
time it was first discovered; but its most important period began
when it became a high-security colonial prison in 1867. The
overcrowding of Brisbane's gaols resulted in the conversion of
buildings originally intended for a quarantine station on St.
Helena Island, into accommodations for prisoners convicted for a
wide variety of crimes.

The 'Australasian Confederates' is a compilation of all the
presently known and confirmed American Civil War Confederate
veterans that were either born in, were from or are buried in
Australia and New Zealand; those individuals that elected to serve
in either the Confederate States of America's Army or Naval forces,
or in other positions beneficial to the Confederate States of
America. Some of those born in or from Australia and New Zealand
never returned to their home countries and were buried elsewhere;
some in the Southern states of the United States.
There were many amusing incidents that occurred involving soldiers
during the American Civil War; many of which never came to light or
was ever written about. These short stories and anecdotes are some
of the amusing, interesting and heart rendering incidents that
soldiers revealed to their friends after they returned home after
the war. In reading these, you will experience the personal touch
and see how the war really affected many of the soldiers on the
battlefield, on both sides; many of whom were not always enemies,
yet they sought to kill the one another due to orders and corrupt
politicians. It shows the human side of the soldier, rather than
the military side that we were taught to accept.
This manuscript has been compiled for one purpose only; to honor
those brave and loyal African American individuals who in reality
did in fact fight and sometimes die for the land they loved and
people they regarded as their friends and family; the American
south and its people. Many historians have chosen to ignore those
individuals and have tried to write them out of the history books,
to deny them their heritage and to convince the world they never
existed. The problem with their misinformation, however, is that
United States Federal documents do in fact acknowledge their
existence, their service to the southern states, their Confederate
Regiments and their membership and participation in numerous
Confederate Reunions after the war ended.
