Collection of two comedies. In 'No Strings Attached' (2011), when long-time friends Emma (Natalie Portman) and Adam (Ashton Kutcher) decide to add a physical dimension to their relationship and move into 'friends with benefits' territory, they agree to keep things strictly casual and on a 'no strings' basis. But before long both of them find things becoming more complicated than planned as those pesky emotions get in the way. In 'Morning Glory' (2010), a sparky, ambitious young television producer spies an opportunity to claw her way up the career ladder when she is offered a job on 'Daybreak', the worst-performing morning chat show in the ratings. Her decision to hire veteran newscaster Mike Pomeroy (Harrison Ford) to host the show meets with scepticism from network executive Jerry (Jeff Goldblum) and co-host Colleen Peck (Diane Keaton), and with little enthusiasm from Pomeroy himself, who is obliged by his contract to take this less-than-promising gig. Can Becky overcome the poor ratings and in-fighting to bring the team together and transform the show into something to be proud of?
Double bill of dramas adapted from novels. George Clooney stars in the satirical comedy drama 'Up in the Air' (2009), based on the novel by Walter Kirn. Ryan Bingham (Clooney) is a corporate downsizing expert - in other words, his job is to fire people from theirs - and he takes his job very seriously. He travels the length and breadth of the country, racking up air miles and living out of a suitcase, and relishing every moment of it. When his job and way of life come under threat by new centralised procedures implemented by his hotshot colleague Natalie (Anna Kendrick), Ryan determines to show her just how valuable his role is - but instead ends up facing up to some of the pitfalls of his lifestyle. The film won the 2010 BAFTA for Best Adapted Screenplay. Marc Forster directs 'The Kite Runner', an adaptation of Khaled Hosseini's bestseller about one man's search for redemption from a childhood betrayal in his native Afghanistan. Childhood friends Amir (Zekeriah Ebrahimi) and Hassan (Ahmad Khan Mahmidzada) spend their days on the streets of Kabul getting up to mischief and eagerly awaiting the spectacular kite-fighting contests. But the joyous excitement of the day is ruined by a shocking act that changes the two boys' relationship forever, with Amir leaving soon after to live in America, just as the threat of war becomes a grim reality. 20 years later, and still haunted by the past, Amir (played as an adult by Khalid Abdalla) returns to Afghanistan, now in the grip of the Taliban, determined to finally redeem himself.
Erotic psychodrama directed by Atom Egoyan, based on Anne Fontaine's 2003 film 'Nathalie'. Amanda Seyfried stars as Chloe, a young prostitute who is hired by gynaecologist Catherine (Julianne Moore) to test the loyalty of her husband David (Liam Neeson), whom she suspects of infidelity. Desire and jealousy intermingle as Chloe becomes increasingly involved in Catherine's life, setting her sights beyond David and onto the couple's wayward teenage son, Michael (Max Thierot).
Offbeat indie comedy starring Alexis Blendel as the eternally optimistic Ryden Malby, who is forced to move back into her childhood home with her eccentric family after graduating from college. While harbouring fantasies of a luxurious loft apartment and a dream job in a top publishing house, she struggles to get along with her wacky dad Walter (Michael Keaton), down-to-earth mum Carmella (Jane Lynch), politically incorrect Grandma Maureen (Carol Burnett), decidedly odd little brother Hunter (Bobby Coleman) - and a growing stack of job application rejections.
Narcissa Whitman and her husband, Marcus, went to Oregon as missionaries in 1836, accompanied by the Reverend Henry Spalding and his wife, Eliza. It was, as Narcissa wrote, "an unheard of journey for females." Narcissa Whitman kept a diary during the long trip from New York and continued to write about her rigorous and amazing life at the Protestant mission near present-day Walla Walla, Washington. Her words convey her complex humanity and devotion to the Christian conversion and welfare of the Indians. Clifford Drury sketches in the circumstances that, for the Whitmans, resulted in tragedy. Eliza Spalding, equally devout and also artistic, relates her experiences in a pioneering venture. Drury also includes the diary of Mary Augusta Dix Gray and a biographical sketch of Sarah Gilbert White Smith, later arrivals at the Whitman mission.
