The Market Oriented University - Transforming Higher Education (Hardcover): John A. Davis, Mark A. Farrell The Market Oriented University - Transforming Higher Education (Hardcover)

The next decade will be transformative for the higher education sector. Government funding is decreasing. Through their marketing activities universities have created the `student consumer.' The student consumer is prepared to shop around, compare prices and value, and once purchased expects a return on their investment. Disruptive innovations are challenging traditional forms of learning and in many cases are viewed as better alternatives to traditional learning in the classroom. Competition from private educational providers is increasing. Their cost base is lower, and their customer focus is superior. In short, universities around the world are facing a perfect storm. While experts don't expect the higher education sector to collapse under these challenges, they do believe that for some institutions the future looks bleak. If universities are to avoid closures or mergers, they will need to adopt a market-oriented approach. This timely book urges readers to view students as customers and focuses on how universities need to reinvent themselves in order to stay relevant. Striking a difference between market-oriented and marketing, the authors provide various examples of institutions around the world that are making efforts to reposition themselves. Additionally, this book delves into the issue of undervalued faculty, arguing that education practices are in desperate need of being reimagined due to the abundance of MOOCs and adaptive and experiential learning practices within universities these days. Both university and academic leaders alike, including presidents, provosts, deans, and faculty will find value in the instructional aspects of this book as they relate to their involvement with institutional advancement agendas as well as providing insight into the changing nature of higher education and the evolving definition of what an academic career now entails.

Collection of children's animated features. In 'The Nut Job' (2014) sassy squirrel Surly (voice of Will Arnett) and his mute rat friend Buddy decide to tackle their park's food shortage problem by stealing from a dangerous group of urban animals. But, their plan goes awry as they come face-to-face with urban leader Raccoon (Liam Neeson). After a series of unfortunate collisions, Surly is banished from the park leaving Buddy to fend for himself. Noticing a human's nut cart in the park, Surly sets about re-establishing his position in the colony; little does he know that the nut cart is a cover for a group of thieves who plan to rob the local bank. 'Sammy's Great Escape' (2012) follows ageing turtle Sammy (Alan Shearman) as he is swept away on an adventure to Dubai. When Sammy and his lifelong friend Ray (Khary Payton) are caught by poachers they find themselves destined to become part of an aquarium display. As the duo plan an escape, along with their new acquaintances which include a blob fish, a lobster, an octopus and a group of penguins, their young grandchildren go off on an adventure of their own in an effort to save their grandpas. In 'The Any Bully' (2006) Lucas Nickle (Zach Tyler) is a ten-year-old boy whose family has just moved to a new town, and Lucas isn't enjoying it much. He hasn't made any friends yet, his big sister ignores him and his parents are occupied with their upcoming vacation to Mexico. To make matters worse, the local bully has targeted Lucas and is making his life miserable. After finding a large colony of ants in his yard, Lucas takes out his frustrations by stomping, drowning, and burying the bugs, not realising that the ants see him as a threat to their safety and aren't about to take his attacks lying down. Zoc (Nicolas Cage), the wizard ant, creates a formula that shrinks Lucas to the size of an insect, and the tiny boy is brought before the leader of the Ant Council and the Queen of the Colony (Meryl Streep) to answer for his crimes against the ants. Showing compassion, the Queen sentences Lucas not to death, but to live among them to see how difficult their circumstances can be. In 'The Reef' (2006) Pi (Freddie Prinze Jr), an ordinary fish from Boston who arrives at the exotic reef to live with his Aunt Pearl (Fran Drescher). He is immediately attracted to Cordelia (Evan Rachel Wood), the fish of his dreams. There's just one problem - Troy (Donal Logue), the meanest shark in the ocean, who not only patrols the reef keeping its community in fear of becoming his next meal, but also has his eye on Cordelia and wants her for himself. Pi must join up with his new group of friends and try and outwit Troy and his henchmen, save the reef and win Cordelia.

Lucas Nickle's the new kid in town and the local bully, Steve, makes sure he knows it. Lucas gets so fed up with being bullied, he takes out his frustration on ants in his backyard in hilarious ways, like squirting them with his garden hose or stamping on the ant hill.

The ants are understandably fed up with this and Zoc the ant wizard uses a potion to shrink him down to ant size! Lucas is sentenced to hard labor in the ruins and learns to be more compassionate to ants. He becomes an ant friend, then must become an ant hero when Stan Beals, the local pest control guy, who's an even bigger bully, comes to wipe out the entire colony.

An "ants vs pest control" battle ensues and Zoc reluctantly accepts that Lucas may be the ants' only chance of survival.

Compiled by two highly respected authors and museum curators, this richly illustrated book features 100 objects - ranging from a Viking Thor's Hammer and Lord Nelson's funeral drape, to the whistle used during the Christmas truce of 1914. Norfolk has evidence of a substantially longer human past than any other part of Britain. The discovery of the beautiful Happisburgh handaxe, described inside, led to a find of further flint tools twice as old as anything found elsewhere in the country. Each object tells a fascinating story in its own right, adding depth and colour to the chapters of Norfolk's history. The result is an illuminating visual record, demonstrating the central role objects have in understanding our past and revealing the often crucial role Norfolk has played in the development of our national story.

Evaluating marketing performance and decision making more fairly

Marketing has long been considered an art and not a science, but that perception is beginning to change as increasingly sophisticated methods of quantifying marketing success are developed. In "Measuring Marketing: 103 Key Metrics Every Marketer Needs, Second Edition," one of the world's leading experts in the field presents the key marketing ratios and metrics. Applying these metrics will enable marketers to make better decisions and increase their accountability for their strategies and activities.

This fully revised and updated new edition discusses the key marketing metrics needed for successfully measuring the performance of an organization's marketing investments. CEOs and CFOs regularly ask for one simple way to assess the efficacy of marketing campaigns, but the fact is that there isn't one single measure of performance. "Measuring Marketing" helps marketers figure out what they can and should be measuring and when.Marketers are increasingly being held accountable for the corporate bottom line, and this book helps both marketers, as well as the business leaders who employ them, to measure performance fairly and accuratelyMeasuring marketing success is difficult, but this book shows what and when to assessDesigned to increase accountability and improve everyday decisions, the book includes ratios illustrated with actual marketing cases from leading companies

The first book to address growing demands that marketers be accountable for their strategies and decisions, "Measuring Marketing" explains how to assess marketing success in more meaningful ways.

Castles and the Anglo-Norman World draws together a series of 20 papers by 26 French and English specialists in the field of Anglo-Norman studies. It includes summaries of current knowledge and new research into important Norman castles in England and Normandy, drawing on information from recent excavations. Sections consider the evolution of Anglo-Norman castles, the architecture and archaeology of Norman monuments, Romanesque architecture and artefacts, the Bayeux Tapestry and the presentation of historic sites to the public. These studies are presented together with a consideration of the 12th century cross-Channel Norman Empire, which provides a broader context. This work is the result of a conference held at Norwich Castle in 2012, which was part of a collaboration between professionals in the fields of archaeology, architecture, museums and heritage, under the banner of the Norman Connections Project.

Sir William Hamilton personified the age of the Enlightenment - a collector and connoisseur, amateur scientist and archaeologist, vulcanologist, anthropologist and above all a gentleman of taste and intellectual curiosity - and in Naples, one of the most fascinating stations on the Grand Tour, he had found his ideal setting.
As King George III's ambassador to the Kingdom of Naples from 1764-1800, Sir William was witness to some pivotal events in European history. The Hamilton Letters is the first collection of his complete correspondence with the English court between 1797 and 1799. It sheds vivid light on the history of the kingdom of Naples on the cusp of the Napoleonic Wars as France and Spain jostled for control in the region as well as on the nature of power and government at the end of the 18th century. Included here is Sir William's own account of Nelson's betrayal of the Neapolitan Republic when, rather than granting the royalist leaders safe passage back to France as agreed, Nelson turned his guns on them - a hugely controversial decision, both for contemporary audiences and ever since, and one in which Sir William's own role is still hotly contested.
The Hamilton Letters offers an engaging portrait of a complex and sophisticated figure and brings a dynamic period of history to life. It is an invaluable guide to the period which will enthrall anyone interested in the colourful world of 19th-century European history.
