John Jenkins; Mary Hogarth
R4,696 Discovery Miles 46 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Lively and engaging, How to Launch a Magazine in this Digital Age adopts a practical guide for students and inexperienced editors, detailing the process of setting up and launching a new publication -- be it digital, print or a combination of both. Using case studies, theoretical/critical insights, and tests/exercises, this is the first how-to to embrace digital technologies, including a companion website with additional support with podcasts, web links, forums and timed live author chats. The key to the text's success is its ability to encompass the complete process. It begins with the initial idea and follows the process through to developing a business plan as well as setting an editorial strategy to achieve and maintain an audience in a digital age -- where traditional print formats face an uncertain future. It includes checklists and realistic timescales for producing a digital/print magazine, for both the working professional and the student in the classroom setting.

"A brilliant breakthrough in pilgrimage studies. An exemplary study that shows how to bring together different academic and institutional interests in a common cause - understanding the relationship between pilgrimage and English cathedrals over time. A publication that will, hopefully, inspire similar collaborative studies around the globe." - John Eade, Professor of Sociology and Anthropology, University of Roehampton, UK "People who oversee, minister, lead worship, guide, welcome, manage, market, promote and maintain cathedrals will find this book an indispensable treasure. It is aware of the awesome complexity inherent in cathedral life but it doesn't duck the issues: its clear-eyed focus is on the way people experience cathedrals and how these extraordinary holy places can speak and connect with all the diversity represented by the people who come to them. In a spiritually-hungry age, this book shows us how to recognise and meet that hunger. This book will be required reading for all us "insiders" trying to invite and signpost access to holy ground." - The Very Reverend Adrian Dorber, Dean of Lichfield, Chair of the Association of English Cathedrals This book looks at England's cathedrals and their relationship with pilgrimage throughout history and in the present day. The volume brings together historians, social scientists, and cathedral practitioners to provide groundbreaking work, comprising a historical overview of the topic, thematic studies, and individual views from prominent clergy discussing how they see pilgrimage as part of the contemporary cathedral experience.

William and Lawrence Bragg, Father and Son - The Most Extraordinary Collaboration in Science (Hardcover): John Jenkin William and Lawrence Bragg, Father and Son - The Most Extraordinary Collaboration in Science (Hardcover)
John Jenkin
R2,386 Discovery Miles 23 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In 1912 Lawrence Bragg explained the interaction of X-rays with crystals, and he and his father (William) thereby pioneered X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. They then led the latter field internationally for 50 years, when most areas of science were transformed by the knowledge created: physics, chemistry, geology, materials science, electronics, and most recently biology and medical science. This book charts how this humble pair (William English, his son Australian) rose from obscurity to international prominence and then back to current, undeserved obscurity. Attention is also given to the crucial roles of both father and son during the dreadful years of the First World War, and to William's early and unshakeable belief in the dual wave and particle natures of radiation and his eventual vindication.
Unlike earlier studies, the book highlights the intimate interactions between father and son that made their project possible, emphasizes personal, family, and wider human relationships, and offers new insights into teaching and research in a British colonial setting.

In celebration of the 2021 visit to the University of Notre Dame by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, as well as the thirtieth anniversary of his election, this groundbreaking volume gathers together and introduces eleven important joint statements from the patriarch, addressing diverse topics from climate change to ecumenical dialogue. As the spiritual leader of 300 million Orthodox Christians worldwide, His All-Holiness Bartholomew, Orthodox Archbishop of Constantinople-New Rome and Ecumenical Patriarch, has long been a beacon for strengthening inter-religious and inter-faith dialogues on the world stage. This volume assembles eleven joint statements initiated by the ecumenical patriarch with prominent global Christian leaders, including Pope Francis, Pope Benedict XVI, Pope St. John Paul II, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, and Archbishop Ieronymos II. It also includes Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew's address at Notre Dame upon receiving an honorary doctorate. The statements address a wide array of pressing issues, including human rights, the environment, support of migrants, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the relationship between the Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches, frequently referred to as "sister churches." The book contains a foreword by John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., president of the University of Notre Dame, and an introduction by John Chryssavgis, which provides an overview of the ecumenical patriarch's long ministry and powerful vision, illustrating his significance both within the Orthodox world as well as on the world stage. Beyond its testimony to the patriarch's longstanding commitment to interreligious and inter-Christian dialogue, this collection of joint statements has the added benefit of gathering these all-important texts into one convenient place for the first time.

Discover Novel and Insightful Knowledge from Data Represented as a Graph
Practical Graph Mining with R presents a "do-it-yourself" approach to extracting interesting patterns from graph data. It covers many basic and advanced techniques for the identification of anomalous or frequently recurring patterns in a graph, the discovery of groups or clusters of nodes that share common patterns of attributes and relationships, the extraction of patterns that distinguish one category of graphs from another, and the use of those patterns to predict the category of new graphs.

"

Hands-On Application of Graph Data Mining"
Each chapter in the book focuses on a graph mining task, such as link analysis, cluster analysis, and classification. Through applications using real data sets, the book demonstrates how computational techniques can help solve real-world problems. The applications covered include network intrusion detection, tumor cell diagnostics, face recognition, predictive toxicology, mining metabolic and protein-protein interaction networks, and community detection in social networks.

"

Develops Intuition through Easy-to-Follow Examples and Rigorous Mathematical Foundations"
Every algorithm and example is accompanied with R code. This allows readers to see how the algorithmic techniques correspond to the process of graph data analysis and to use the graph mining techniques in practice. The text also gives a rigorous, formal explanation of the underlying mathematics of each technique.

"

Makes Graph Mining Accessible to Various Levels of Expertise
"Assuming no prior knowledge of mathematics or data mining, this self-contained book is accessible to students, researchers, and practitioners of graph data mining. It is suitable as a primary textbook for graph mining or as a supplement to a standard data mining course. It can also be used as a reference for researchers in computer, information, and computational science as well as a handy guide for data analytics practitioners.

Most tourism activities take place at a destination, and destination serves as a fundamental unit of analysis in any modelling of the tourism system. However, destination marketing and management is a complex subject that requires a comprehensive, holistic and systematic approach. From the demand side, travellers have a choice of available destinations; from the supply side, destination marketing organizations are competing for attention from a highly competitive marketplace. Taking an integrated and comprehensive approach, this book focuses on both the macro and micro aspects of destination marketing and management. Some key areas covered include the consumer decision making process, product development and distribution and the use of emerging technologies in destination marketing.

The King's Chamberlain - William Sandys of the Vyne, Chamberlain to Henry VIII (Hardcover): John Jenkins The King's Chamberlain - William Sandys of the Vyne, Chamberlain to Henry VIII (Hardcover)
John Jenkins
R613 R504 Discovery Miles 5 040 Save R109 (18%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book looks at the life, activities and achievements of William, 1st Baron Sandys, Knight of the Garter. It is the story of a Hampshire man who, during the reigns of Henry VII and Henry VIII, achieved prominence from a relatively modest but well-connected position. He was very close to the centres of power throughout most of his life and was inevitably involved in the political and religious issues of the time. His relationships with Henry VIII, Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Cardinal Wolsey, Thomas Cromwell and senior courtiers are discussed. Evidence is presented that suggests that Sandys played a role in the downfall of Anne Boleyn. From the time he fought in the battle of Stoke in 1487, where he was knighted by Henry VII, to his death, Sandys was regarded as an outstanding soldier and was feared and respected by his French opponents. He rose from Treasurer of War in the 1512 Spanish campaign and Treasurer of Calais between 1517 and 1526 to become, for the last fourteen years of his life, Chamberlain to Henry VIII. In the 1520s he built himself the Vyne mansion, which has been described as a palace and was visited by Henry VIII and Elizabeth I on multiple occasions. He also extended the Holy Ghost Chapel in Basingstoke and converted Mottisfont priory to another mansion. All were furnished to the highest standards and taste using English and Flemish craftsmen.
