"This story is one for the ages...at a time when the concept of marriage in our society is so fragile and its reality so weakened, the strength and courage of the marriage relationship, so beautifully depicted here, is a remarkable witness to the Orthodox way." + HERMAN, Retired Archbishop of Washington Metropolitan of All America and Canada These letters and journals were written by an intelligent, University trained woman who successfully resisted the "feminism" model in her generation and found her true career in marriage-with children. She supported her husband in church work and Bible translation for non-literate tribal people, standing with him for evolution-free education.

"In reading the text I found myself touched by the story. I favor the publication of this worthy project."-The Right Reverend NIKOLAI, Bishop of Sitka, Ankorage and Alaska Orthodox Church in America "As a Christian and a student of clinical psychology, trying to reconcile the gaps between the secular world and Christ's values has always been difficult. Not only did I relate to Petar's struggles, but his triumph in continually being obedient to God's call was the most inspirational I have ever witnessed. His manuscript depicts how God IS faithful and all glory is His. What a testimony "-Amalyssa J. Rodriguez, Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology "As Christ calls each man to 'follow me, and I will make you fishers of men', it is inspiring to read about one man's decision to turn from the 'world' and trust God to provide during this journey."-Benjamin G. Johnson, Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology
This book gathers stories of transformations, which occurred to the land, people, and communities of the anthracite coal region in general and Mt. Carmel in particular. It tells how Eastern Europeans were recruited by giant railroad companies to work (and often die) in their dangerous mines. It also shows how these people who were at first alienated by their new surroundings soon developed confidence and pride in their work, and built a supportive community that survived the boom and bust of anthracite mining. The Deppen Scholars share how they followed their ancestors' path as they first experienced alienation, then gained the confidence to ultimately graduate with pride from Bucknell University. contemporary interdisciplinary case study that cuts across history, sociology and education while mixing a bit of the economics of de-industrialization. trying to over analyze their underlying motivations. An interesting exploration of the emergence of class consciousness. We didn't feel poor in Mt. Carmel so class consciousness resulted from our interactions at Bucknell and beyond. We appreciate your good, hard work and for having it read more like a novel than a treatise cultural--presented in the context of a caring professor's quest to understand and connect with the people of a small Pennsylvania anthracite town.
