In Eastern Metis, Michel Bouchard, Sebastien Malette, and Siomonn
Pulla demonstrate the historical and social evidence for the
origins and continued existence of Metis communities across
Ontario, Quebec, and the Canadian Maritimes as well as the West.
Contributors to this edited collection explore archival and
historical records that challenge narratives which exclude the
possibility of Metis communities and identities in central and
eastern Canada. Taking a continental rhizomatic approach, this book
provides a rich and nuanced view of what it means to be Metis.
Derided as being fake, race-shifting, cultural appropriators,
Eastern Metis demonstrates the historical and social evidence for
the origins and continued existence of Metis communities across
Ontario and the Canadian Maritimes as well as the West. The authors
in this volume explore the archival and historical record that
challenges dominant nationalist tropes of all stripes, narratives
which exclude the very possibility of legitimate Metis communities
and identities in central and eastern Canada. Taking a continental
rhizomatic approach, the book provides a rich and nuanced view of
what it means to be Metis.
This title was first published in 2001. Modality and
Anti-Metaphysics critically examines the most prominent approaches
to modality among analytic philosophers in the twentieth century,
including essentialism. Defending both the project of metaphysics
and the essentialist position that metaphysical modality is
conceptually and ontologically primitive, Stephen McLeod argues
that the logical positivists did not succeed in banishing
metaphysical modality from their own theoretical apparatus and he
offers an original defence of metaphysics against their advocacy of
its elimination. Seeking to assuage the sceptical worries which
underlie modal anti-realism, McLeod provides an original
contribution to essentialist epistemology, engaging with current
debates about modality and suggesting that standard essentialist
approaches to some issues in the philosophies of logic and language
require revision. This book offers valuable insights to
professional philosophers, postgraduates and advanced
undergraduates interested in metaphysics, philosophy of logic or
the history of twentieth-century analytic philosophy.
A calendar year's worth of historical events are presented along
with auctions of related collectibles in this fun and informative
compilation. The day-by-day historical entries and corresponding
sales are arranged chronologically from January 1 to December 31.
Many of the sales, both public and private, were for fabulous sums.
The Cowardly Lion's costume from The Wizard of Oz auctioned for $3+
million. Joan of Arc's ring sold for almost $425,000. The most
expensive album wasn't by the Beatles, but by Wu-Tang Clan, whose
Once Upon a Time in Shaolin sold for a reported $2 million. More
than 650 images further illustrate the antiques, artworks, pop
culture memorabilia, and ephemera. Did you know the largest sum
paid for an artwork by a living artist was more than $57 million?

A lively, colorful figure drawing instruction book that encourages
aspiring illustrators to work in ink and watercolor to create quick,
confident renderings of diverse, contemporary people.
While today's illustrators work primarily in ink and watercolor, figure
drawing instruction still tends to emphasize work in pencil. Commercial
illustrator Kagan McLeod offers an approach to figure and portrait
drawing more in keeping with today's preferred tools and techniques,
one that focuses on cultivating spontaneity, energy, and confidence by
providing exercises for brush work in ink and watercolor. By breaking
figure and portrait drawing into the three major aspects of line, tone,
and color and recommending time limits for each exercise, McLeod
encourages working fast and fearless, rather than worrying about
getting your figures just right. Filled with numerous illustrative
examples of diverse, modern people, Draw People Every Day reflects
practical, applicable techniques to get you drawing the people you see
in the world around you with speed and proficiency.
