He was injured at work and then suffered a massive heart attack and stroke that left him unable to speak or walk. When he was in his early 20s, he joined the Army. As a civilian he served as a volunteer fireman and auxiliary policeman for over 20 years. Just One Soldier is a book that contains 80 letters written by Dick in 1954 to his family while serving in the Korean War stationed in Japan. The book also contains the words of a diary written by Dick's mother covering the two and a half years just prior to his death.
