Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States (Abridged, Hardcover, Abridged edition): Joseph Story Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States (Abridged, Hardcover, Abridged edition)
Joseph Story; Introduction by Kermit Roosevelt
R1,474 Discovery Miles 14 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Joseph Story's famous and influential review of the origins, influences, and early interpretations of the U.S. Constitution is now presented in the author's own 1833 Abridged Edition-considered the most useful and readable version of this important work, from the Supreme Court's youngest Justice. The new, affordable hardcover edition adds a 2013 introduction by Kermit Roosevelt III. One of the United States' most influential legal scholars and jurists, Joseph Story wrote his landmark treatise before the Civil War, describing federalism, states' histories, freedoms, and constitutional structure. He abridged it into this usable book. Adding an informative foreword by constitutional scholar Kermit Roosevelt III of the University of Pennsylvania Law School, the Quid Pro edition features modern and readable formatting (compared to mere photocopies of the original, with its expansive and dated print size), as well as embedded pagination from the original, for continuity of referencing and citation. Professor Roosevelt catalogs many instances in which the current Court has relied on this book to decide issues of gun rights, federalism, and privacy. In addition, he provides a fascinating biographical summary of Story and describes the origins of this monumental work, as well as the influence it has had on legal history since 1833. Part of the Legal Legends Series from Quid Pro Books. The series also includes legendary works, in quality ebook and print formats, from Oliver Wendell Holmes, Louis Brandeis, Roscoe Pound, Benjamin Cardozo, Thomas Reed Powell, John Chipman Gray, Woodrow Wilson, and Karl Llewellyn. These editions are introduced and explained by today's recognized scholars in the field, and they exhibit a care in reproduction and presentation often lacking in modern republications of historic books.

Life and death in the skies above the battlefields of France
There are few books written by the dauntless young pilots who fought the first real war of the air when powered aircraft bombed, strafed, observed or fought in life or death dogfights over the battle lines. This special Leonaur edition contains two riveting accounts of the early conflict in the clouds by American pilots who flew for the allied cause. Charles Biddle volunteered to join the French Foreign Legion and became a member of the Aviation Division. In the course of the war he flew with the French Escadrille N. 73, the internationally famous Lafayette Escadrille and then, as the United States of America joined the allied fight in 1917, with the 13th Aero Squadron and the 4th Pursuit Group. Biddle's book is partnered here by an account, edited by his brother Kermit and with letters, of the wartime experiences of Quentin Roosevelt, son of Theodore Roosevelt. Quentin joined the United States Army Air Service, first in a reserve squadron and ultimately in the 95th Aero Squadron serving in France. While flying his Nieuport 28 aircraft, Roosevelt was shot down and killed in July 1918 during combat with German aircraft, four months before the end of the war. These are thrilling accounts flyers at the sharp end of war and are an invaluable addition to the libraries of everyone interested in air combat.
Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Supremely Partisan - How Raw Politics Tips the Scales in the United States Supreme Court (Hardcover): James D. Zirin Supremely Partisan - How Raw Politics Tips the Scales in the United States Supreme Court (Hardcover)
James D. Zirin; Foreword by Kermit Roosevelt
R580 R502 Discovery Miles 5 020 Save R78 (13%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

On the eve of a presidential election that may determine the makeup of Supreme Court justices for decades to come, prominent attorney James D. Zirin argues that the Court has become increasingly partisan, rapidly making policy choices right and left on bases that have nothing to do with law or the Constitution. Zirin explains how we arrived at the present situation and looks at the current divide through its leading partisans, Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor on the left and Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas on the right. He also examines four of the Court's most controversial recent decisions - Hobby Lobby, Obamacare, gay marriage, and capital punishment - arguing that these politicized decisions threaten to undermine public confidence in the Supreme Court.
