Radial Animal Studies: Beyond Respectability Politics, Opportunism,
and Cooptation is a scholar-activist book emerging out of the field
of Critical Animal Studies (CAS). Radical Animal Studies (RAS)
edited by Anthony J. Nocella II and Kim Socha recognizes and values
the goal of total liberation and the importance of underground
revolutionary direct action. RAS is a complement to, not in
conflict with, CAS. Indeed, RAS is dedicated to two of the ten CAS
principles: seven (total liberation) and nine (radical politics and
strategies). This book is an essential read for social justice
community organizers, animal liberation activists, and
intersectional total liberation scholars.

As animal exploitation increases, animal liberation issues are of
growing concern, as seen through the rise of veganism, academic
disciplines devoted to animal issues, and mainstream critiques of
factory farms. Yet as the dialogues, debates and books continue to
grow, the voices of ""street level"" activists--not academics,
journalists or vegan chefs--are rarely heard on a national level.
This volume broadens animal liberation dialogues by offering the
arguments, challenges, inspiration and narratives of grassroots
activists. The essays show what animal advocacy looks like from a
collective of individuals living in and around Minnesota's Twin
Cities; the essayists, however, write of issues, both personal and
political, that resound on a global scale. This collection provides
a platform for rank and file activists to explain why and how they
dedicate their time and what is being done for animals on a local
level that can translate to global efforts to end animal
exploitation.
This is the first book to define the philosophical and practical
parameters of critical animal studies (CAS). Rooted in anarchist
perspectives that oppose all systems of domination and
authoritarianism, CAS both challenges anthropocentrism and presents
animal liberation as a social justice movement that intersects with
other movements for positive change. Written by a collection of
internationally respected scholar-activists, each chapter expands
upon the theory and practice underlying the total liberation
approach, the roles of academics and activists, and the ten
principles of CAS. With apolitical animal studies and exploitative
animal research dominating higher education, this book offers a
timely counter-narrative that demands the liberation of all
oppressed beings and the environment. Defining Critical Animal
Studies will interest educators, students, activists, community
members, and policy makers seeking accessible theory that can be
put into action.
