This open access book presents the proceedings of the 3rd
Indo-German Conference on Sustainability in Engineering held at
Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, India, on
September 16-17, 2019. Intended to foster the synergies between
research and education, the conference is one of the joint
activities of the BITS Pilani and TU Braunschweig conducted under
the auspices of Indo-German Center for Sustainable Manufacturing,
established in 2009. The book is divided into three sections:
engineering, education and entrepreneurship, covering a range of
topics, such as renewable energy forecasting, design &
simulation, Industry 4.0, and soft & intelligent sensors for
energy efficiency. It also includes case studies on lean and green
manufacturing, and life cycle analysis of ceramic products, as well
as papers on teaching/learning methods based on the use of learning
factories to improve students'problem-solving and personal skills.
Moreover, the book discusses high-tech ideas to help the large
number of unemployed engineering graduates looking for jobs become
tech entrepreneurs. Given its broad scope, it will appeal to
academics and industry professionals alike.
Written by medical specialists and faculty of the Department of
Obstetricians and Gynaecology, National University Health Services,
Integrated Approach to Obstetrics and Gynaecology is a textbook for
medical undergraduates and residents. This textbook is unique in
that it takes an integrated approach in discussing the six phases
in the life of a woman, namely, the early years of growing up, the
reproductive years, pre-conception, early pregnancy, pregnancy
care, and functional ageing in a mature woman.Emphasis has been
focused on information that constitutes essential 'core knowledge'
in the blueprint of the medical undergraduate curriculum. The
format is easy to follow: background introduction to history;
examinations and investigations to establish a diagnosis and then
treatment and management. However, this may have to be modified as
deemed appropriate for a particular topic. Where appropriate,
knowledge that is 'good to know' has been incorporated beyond the
essential 'core knowledge'.

This book offers effective and competitive food supply chains that
are the consequence of technological innovation, collaboration,
small agri-food business cases, entrepreneurial opportunities, cold
chain technology management, disruptive technologies, and
performance assessment through empirical analysis, case studies,
and multimethod research in the food industry. The book
comprehensively covers different interfaces of the food supply
chain including procurement, processing, distribution, consumer,
i.e., farm to fork. It provides solutions to various challenges
such as globalization, food recalls, technological innovations, and
consumer trust. This book will be of interest to researchers in the
areas of the food supply chain, operations management, industrial
engineering as well as professionals in the agri-food and allied
industry.
Thinking about Life K. S. Gentleman Life is defined in different
ways, and each definition depends on what a soul holds to be the
truth. Whether life is a battle or a gift, carefully planned or
spontaneously lived, every moment is worthy to be cherished, kept
as memories, as well as to inspire others whose light of souls are
dimmed by the harsh challenges they face. In Thinking about Life,
K. S. Gentleman aims to become the "lighthouse" for unfortunate
souls that get lost in the darkness. Through his poems such as
"Life Is War, Learn How to Win," K.S. Gentleman beckons his readers
to not only think about life, but see it in a new and different
light. About the Author K. S. Gentleman was born and raised in
India. He immigrated to the United States of America in 1990 and
became an American citizen, along with his wife and children. His
passion for the English language and poetry nurtured his desire to
write his own poems, some of which were entered in various poetry
writing competitions. He currently lives in Aurora, Illinois, with
his family.
Weeds constitute an integral part of any productive terrestrial
ecosystem and are specialized form of vegetation highly successful
in agricultural lands. They are characterized by rapid growth,
short lifecycle and wide ecological amplitude. The evolution of
weeds has been markedly influenced by agriculture and human
disturbances. The weeds are commonly known as alien invasive
species which spread very fast at the cost of native vegetations.
Invasive species means an alien species which becomes established
in natural or semi-natural ecosystems or habitats, is an agent of
change, and threatens native biological diversity. The proposed
study on noxious invasive weeds pertained to Chandigarh city (30
42' N, 76 54' E) famous for enormous managed vegetation supported
by native and alien species. Most of the plant species moved by
human beings to the outside their natural ranges only persist and
flourish. During the study, a total of 425 plant species were
recorded from Chandigarh. These species included trees, shrubs,
herbs, sedges, climbers and vines. Out of these, 222 i.e. 52.24%
were weeds/alien plants and 186 i.e. 43.76% were indigenous and 17
(4%)species have unknown origin.
Invasive plant species alter native community composition, deplete
species diversity, affect ecosystem process and thus cause huge
economic and ecological imbalance. These plants possess a set of
remarkable traits that allow them to colonize huge areas upon
invasion. Studies of invasive species introductions in the past
revealed that the impacts of their invasion are complex and can
permanently alter the structure and function of communities, cause
local extinctions and changes in ecosystem processes. The increased
incidence of invasion around the world poses a major threat to
indigenous biological diversity. The authentic identification,
documentation and characterization of the alien plant species in
various areas become very popular to find out the strategies and
methods to manage them in their introduced habitats. Especially it
is very important to put separately indigenous and alien/exotic
plant species in the recently compiled floras as they would be
helpful to find out proper ways for their management.
The book, in three parts, takes one a pictorial journey across the
majestic Himalayas, across borders, from the land of the rising sun
in the east to the extreme west, from Himalayan foothills to Trans
Himalayan regions Himalayan wonders that in times to come, may not
be the same. Included are pictorial articles to put to rest the
controversy on the melting state of Himalayan glaciers the feeders
of major rivers of North-West Himalayas and the life support of the
Indo-Gangetic plain. Finally "Future Shock" we are heading for with
catastrophic consequences not only for the mountain folk, but for
the people of plains a looming environment disaster.
