Young Chinese Migrants: Compressed Individual and Global Condition (Hardcover): Laurence Roulleau-Berger Young Chinese Migrants: Compressed Individual and Global Condition (Hardcover)
Laurence Roulleau-Berger; Translated by Matthew Glasgow
R3,327 Discovery Miles 33 270 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In China less-qualified young migrants are living in subaltern condition and young migrants graduates have strongly internalised the idea of being the "heroes". Young internal and international migrants from China produce through top-dow and bottom-up globalisation. The young Chinese migrant incarnates the Global Individual, what we labeled here as the Compressed Individual.

China's Internal and International Migration (Hardcover): Li Peilin, Laurence Roulleau-Berger China's Internal and International Migration (Hardcover)
Li Peilin, Laurence Roulleau-Berger
R4,369 Discovery Miles 43 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

One consequence of China's economic growth has been a massive increase in migration, both internal and external. Within China millions of rural workers have migrated to the cities. Outside China, many Chinese have migrated to other parts of the world, their remittances home often having a significant impact within China. Also, China's increasing links to other parts of the world have led to a growth in migration to China, most interestingly recently migration from Africa. Based on extensive original research, this book examines a wide range of issues connected to Chinese migration.

Post-Western Sociology - From China to Europe (Paperback): Laurence Roulleau-Berger, Li Peilin Post-Western Sociology - From China to Europe (Paperback)
Laurence Roulleau-Berger, Li Peilin
R1,313 Discovery Miles 13 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is rooted in an epistemological approach to sociology in which the boundaries between Western and non-Western sociologies are acknowledged and built on. It argues that knowledge is organised in conceptual spaces linked to paradigms and programmes which in turn are linked to ethnocentred knowledge processes; that until recently Western approaches, including Post-Colonial, French Social Science and American approaches, have dominated non-Western theories; and that Western theories have sometimes seemed incapable of explaining phenomena produced in other societies. It goes on to argue that the blurring of boundaries between Western and non-Western sociologies is very important; and that such a Post-Western approach will mean co-production and co-construction of common knowledge, the recognition of ignored or forgotten scientific cultures and a "global change" in sociology which imposes theoretical and methodological detours, displacements, reversals and conversions. The book brings together a wide range of Western and Chinese sociologists who explore the consequences of this new approach in relation to many different issues and aspects of sociology.

Ecological Risks and Disasters - New Experiences in China and Europe (Paperback): Li Peilin, Laurence Roulleau-Berger Ecological Risks and Disasters - New Experiences in China and Europe (Paperback)
Li Peilin, Laurence Roulleau-Berger
R1,467 Discovery Miles 14 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Climate change, and also other factors, are capable of bringing about major disasters on a scale hitherto unimaginable. Ecological and other risks, besides having scientific and technological dimensions, are also a subject of study for social scientists, concerned with how disasters and potential disasters are noticed, perceived, guarded against, managed once they have occurred, and coped with after they have happened. This book considers a range of ecological risks and disasters and how they are managed in both China and Europe. It examines how far risks and disasters are perceived and managed in different ways in Europe and China, explores how an increasing humanitarian approach to "vulnerable people" being taken up in Europe is also being adopted in China, and assesses how far the management of disasters differs from wider government management of more ordinary aspects of everyday life. The book argues that the same stresses and strains which are present in normal society are there also, in enhanced form, in disaster situations.

Sociology of Chinese Youth (Book): Liang Su, Laurence Roulleau-Berger Sociology of Chinese Youth (Book)
Liang Su, Laurence Roulleau-Berger
R2,129 Discovery Miles 21 290 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In China, a process of compressed socialization of youth is characterized by multiple spatial, professional and social mobilities. Young skilled Chinese move and circulate to improve their qualification and education levels in order to develop upward social mobility's trajectories. Young low-skilled migrants' biographic pathways are structured around spatial discontinuities and horizontal social mobilities. In labor markets, the phenomenon of structural disqualification impacts young Chinese and the risk of downward social mobility has affected the young middle-class. Platforms appear as new spaces of commodification and subordination that produce a cybertariat. In Chinese mega-cities, social inequalities and urban boundaries do promote segregation and marginalization, while at the same time, young Chinese entrepreneurs are developing international networks and economic cosmopolitanism. Chinese youth are crossing transnational spaces wherein identities are redefined through a process of cultural creolization.
