Torchwood One - we defend the British Empire. We keep everyone safe. For your own good. Something's happened. Something's twisted its way into Torchwood One. Something old. Something which should have been forgotten, wiped, abandoned. Something which has been waiting. Something which knows how the world should be ruled, how people should be used. When humanity's threatened, Yvonne Hartman is required. Torchwood One was first referenced in the hugely-rated modern Doctor Who stories Army of Ghosts and Doomsday. This is a second look at the London-based team before those events after 2016's Torchwood One -Before The Fall. Contains three stories: The Law Machines by Matt Fitton. The Mayor of London is launching her bold new law and order initiative. The capital will be kept safe from crime, from fear, from terrorists. The Law Machines are launching. What could possibly go wrong? Blind Summit by Gareth David-Lloyd. Ianto Jones has just moved to London. He's broke, has no friends, no future. One day he loses the one thing he's been holding on to, and suddenly people around him are dying. Could a mysterious woman really offer him salvation? 9 to 5 by Tim Foley. It's Monday morning. Stacey loves Mondays. Stacey loves every day. Stacey lives to work. She's a temp and she loves it. Only there's a man in the coffee queue who has a terrible warning for her. Stacey is going to die today. CAST: Tracy-Ann Oberman (Yvonne Hartman), Gareth David-Lloyd (Ianto Jones), Jane Asher (Elaine), Paterson Joseph (Matthew), James Wilby (Pascal), Adjoa Andoh (Fiona), Niky Wardley (Stacey), Daniel Anthony (Julian), Tim Bentinck (Tommy), Trevor Neal (Jason), Claire Wyatt (Tanya), Helen Goldwyn (Receptionist), Nicholas Pegg (Law Machines) and WOTAN. What does it mean to be a Navajo (Dine) person today? What does it mean to "respect tradition"? How can a contemporary life be informed by the traditions of the past? These are the kinds of questions addressed by contributors to this unusual and pathbreaking book.
All of the contributors are coming to personal terms with a phrase that underpins the matrix of Dine culture: "Sa'ah Naaghai Bik'eh Hozh""o""o""n"." "Often referred to simply as SNBH, the phrase can be translated in many ways but is generally understood to mean "one's journey of striving to live a long, harmonious life." The book offers a variety of perspectives of Dine men and women on the Dine cultural paradigm that is embedded in SNBH. Their writings represent embodied knowledge grounded in a way of knowing that connects thought, speech, experience, history, tradition, and land. Some of the contributors are scholars. Some are Dine who are fighting for justice and prosperity for the Navajo Nation. Some are poets and artists. They are united in working to preserve both intellectual and cultural sovereignty for Dine peoples. And their contributions exemplify how Indigenous peoples are creatively applying tools of decolonization and critical research to re-create Indigenous thought and culture in a present day that rarely resembles the days of their ancestors.
More than 300,000 people self-identify as Dine today. Every one must grapple with how to make a life that acknowledges "Sa'ah Naaghai Bik'eh Hozh""o""o""n." "Dine"" Perspectives" is unique in bringing such personal journeys to the public eye.
