In this addition to the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture,
two well-respected New Testament scholars interpret the Gospel of
John in its historical and literary setting as well as in light of
the Church's doctrinal, liturgical, and spiritual tradition. They
unpack the wisdom of the Fourth Gospel for the intellectual and
spiritual transformation of its readers and connect the Gospel with
a range of witnesses throughout the whole history of Catholicism.
This volume, like each in the series, is supplemented by features
designed to help readers understand the Bible more deeply and use
it more effectively in teaching, preaching, evangelization, and
other forms of ministry.
Post-tensioning is the most versatile form of pre stressing, a
technique which enables engineers to make the most effective use of
the material properties of concrete, and so to design structural
elements which are strong, slender and efficient. Design in
post-tensioned concrete is not difficult and, if done properly, can
contribute significantly to the economy and the aesthetic qualities
of a building. Post-tensioned floors have found widespread use in
office buildings and car park structures, and are also frequently
employed in warehouses and public buildings. However, in spite of
this, most prestressed concrete texts devote comparatively little
attention to floors, concentrating instead on beam elements. This
book answers the need for a comprehensive treatment of
post-tensioned floor design.

The little-known history of how the Sahara was transformed from a
green and fertile land into the largest hot desert in the world The
Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world, equal in size to
China or the United States. Yet, this arid expanse was once a
verdant, pleasant land, fed by rivers and lakes. The Sahara
sustained abundant plant and animal life, such as Nile perch,
turtles, crocodiles, and hippos, and attracted prehistoric hunters
and herders. What transformed this land of lakes into a sea of
sands? When the Sahara Was Green describes the remarkable history
of Earth’s greatest desert—including why its climate changed,
the impact this had on human populations, and how scientists
uncovered the evidence for these extraordinary events. From the
Sahara’s origins as savanna woodland and grassland to its current
arid incarnation, Martin Williams takes us on a vivid journey
through time. He describes how the desert’s ancient rocks were
first fashioned, how dinosaurs roamed freely across the land, and
how it was later covered in tall trees. Along the way, Williams
addresses many questions: Why was the Sahara previously much
wetter, and will it be so again? Did humans contribute to its
desertification? What was the impact of extreme climatic
episodes—such as prolonged droughts—upon the Sahara’s
geology, ecology, and inhabitants? Williams also shows how plants,
animals, and humans have adapted to the Sahara and what lessons we
might learn for living in harmony with the harshest, driest
conditions in an ever-changing global environment. A valuable look
at how an iconic region has changed over millions of years, When
the Sahara Was Green reveals the desert’s surprising past to
reflect on its present, as well as its possible future.
The Plowboy: Words of Faith and Encouragement Do you seek to gain
wisdom? Do you strive for a personal philosophy of life? Do you
aspire to achieve greatness? If so, then you are not alone. Many
people seek for wisdom as well as knowledge. Many people strive for
a philosophy of life in order to better understand their existence.
Many people aspire to greatness and to leave a lasting legacy.
"Stay away from a wisdom that will not let you laugh, a philosophy
that will not let you cry, and a greatness that will not let you
bow before little children." These life-altering words from Patrick
Martin Williams, Jr. (1898-1988) are engraved on his headstone in
Kentucky. Do you want to have life and to have it more abundantly?
In William's enlightening book, The Plowboy: Words of Faith and
Encouragement, the author explores the Holy Bible and God's plan
for mankind. Williams expounds Jesus' life, sacrifice, and offer of
salvation. The Great Goal: Supremacy of the Bible and a
Christ-centered program. The Great Theme: With Jesus we will live,
but without him we will die. The Great Slogan: The pure in heart
that pray together, around the world, shall stay together forever
in that world without end. Throughout the book, Williams' themes
reinforce the ideal of peace and safety for all mankind. He
develops his compelling guide for a better life by blending
scriptures, anecdotes from childhood, his original poetry, and
country humor. Patrick Martin Williams, Jr. was a thinker. His
studies included theology, philosophy, history, and business.
However, he was also a doer. Williams graduated high school,
completed business school, retired from L & N Railroad Company,
and participated in the Masonic Lodge. He also labored fervently to
help save the lost and strengthen the saved.

Urban air quality is a topic which remains high on the
scientific and political agenda. Concentrations of most air
pollutants are higher in urban areas than in the surrounding rural
regions, and given the high population densities, it is within
urban areas that the majority of the population receive their air
pollutant exposure. Despite the continued implementation of
abatement measures, concentrations of air pollutants within urban
areas frequently exceed health-based guidelines and stricter
measures to restrict emissions are required. This comprehensive
volume, written by authoritative authors, deals with the basic
science of urban air pollution in relation to the sources and
concentrations, and the atmospheric chemical and physical processes
which determine those concentrations and lead to the formation of
secondary pollutants by chemical reactions in the atmosphere. The
health effects of urban air pollution are described as is the
policy response designed to mitigate the problems. Some of the
highest air pollutant exposures occur within underground railway
systems and this topic is considered explicitly in its own chapter.
With comprehensive coverage from sources through atmospheric
processes, to human exposure and effects on health and the policy
response, this topical work will be of interest to scientists and
policy makers within this field as well advanced students.
This work gives a philosophical and theological account of the
belief that Scripture enables people to encounter the life-giving
reality of God. The authors examine the biblical foundations for
this belief as given in a variety of witnesses from both Testaments
and explain the philosophical and theological underpinnings of
Christian exegesis. The book sums up and makes accessible the
teaching of revered senior scholar and teacher Francis Martin and
is aimed squarely at students, assuming no advanced training in
philosophy or theology. It includes a foreword by Robert
Sokolowski.
