Private Security in Africa - From the Global Assemblage to the Everyday (Paperback): Doctor Paul Higate, Mats Utas Private Security in Africa - From the Global Assemblage to the Everyday (Paperback)
Doctor Paul Higate, Mats Utas
R942 Discovery Miles 9 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Across Africa, growing economic inequality, instability and urbanization have led to the rapid spread of private security providers. While these PSPs have already had a significant impact on African societies, their impact has so far received little in the way of comprehensive analysis. Drawing on a wide range of disciplinary approaches, and encompassing anthropology, sociology and political science, Private Security in Africa offers unique insight into the lives and experiences of security providers and those affected by them, as well as into the fragile state context which has allowed them to thrive. Featuring original empirical research and case studies ranging from private policing in South Africa to the recruitment of Sierra Leoneans for private security work in Iraq, the book considers the full implications of PSPs for security and the state, not only for Africa but for the world as a whole.

Maria Baaz Eriksson, Mats Utas
R350 Discovery Miles 3 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As a policy field largely characterised by handbooks and manuals, gender and Security Sector Reform (SSR) has been insufficiently studied and analysed. Analytical discussion of what gendering SSR means is quite rare, as is the study of the already gendered nature of the security institutions that are the subject of intervention. This policy dialogue unpacks aspects of the discourses and practices regarding gender and SSR. It highlights limitations and problems both in the conceptualisation of gender and its incorporation into practical SSR work. The publication also demonstrates how researchers and policymakers often have divergent views of what gendering SSR means. Finally, it calls for closer and more constructive dialogue between researchers and practitioners, a dialogue which acknowledges the conditions and constraints in these two spheres of work.

Sexual Abuse Survivors and the Complex of Traditional Healing (Paperback): Mats Utas Sexual Abuse Survivors and the Complex of Traditional Healing (Paperback)
Mats Utas
R348 Discovery Miles 3 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The international aid community has in their efforts to aid post-conflict communities in Africa actively promoted projects catering for the psycho-social healing of people traumatized during wars and violent conflict. To a large degree these projects have been established in the tradition of Western psychology. However a more recent realization has been that in order to efficiently help survivors of war it is necessary to adapt projects that enhance "local" psycho-social healing. This policy report locates the structures-that have local legitimacy-which are available to young sexual abuse survivors in the Sierra Leone civil war (1991-2002). To this end, the book discusses a healing complex that comprises a number of overlapping actors, including herbalists, Zoe Mammies (heads of the female secret societies), Mori-men (Muslim healers); Karamokos (Muslim teachers), and Christian pastors.

African Conflicts and Informal Power - Big Men and Networks (Paperback): Mats Utas African Conflicts and Informal Power - Big Men and Networks (Paperback)
Mats Utas; Contributions by Maya Mynster Christensen, Koen Vlassenroot, Gerhard Anders, Anders Themner, …
R1,125 Discovery Miles 11 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the aftermath of an armed conflict in Africa, the international community both produces and demands from local partners a variety of blueprints on how to reconstruct state and society. The aim is to re-formalize the state after what is viewed as a brief or extended period of fragmentation and informalization caused by armed conflict. In reality, both African economies and politics are very much informal in character, with informal actors (including so-called "Big Men") often using their positions in the formal structure as a means to reach informal goals. Through a variety of in-depth case studies - from DRC to Somali to Liberia among others - this book shows how important informal political and economic networks are in many of the continent's conflict areas. More than this, it demonstrated that without a proper understanding of their impacts in areas such as borderlands and in "narco-states" such as Guinne-Bissau, attempts to "formalize" African states, particularly those emerging from wars, will be in vain.
