A four-volume set of classic films for Christmas. 'The Sound of Music' (1965) is set in Austria in the 1930s. Ex-nun Maria (Julie Andrews) becomes the governess for a family of seven children who live in the shadow of their domineering and repressed widower father (Christopher Plummer). She brings love, music and excitement into the children's lives and also eventually begins to have an effect on their father. But just when things are looking up, the rise of Nazism and the threat of the coming war darkens all their futures. Includes a host of memorable songs, such as 'Do-Re-Mi', 'Climb Ev'ry Mountain', and 'My Favourite Things'. In the Dickens classic 'A Christmas Carol' (1984), miserly Ebenezer Scrooge (George C. Scott) is a misanthrope unimpressed by the fuss everyone makes during the festive season. That is, until his sleep is disturbed one Christmas Eve by the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future, each of which takes him on a journey which helps him to open his heart to his fellow man and to thereby learn the joy of Christmas. In 'Miracle On 34th Street' (1947), Doris Walker (Maureen O'Hara), an executive at Macy's department store, believes in taking a common-sense approach to life and is consequently raising her daughter Susan (Natalie Wood) not to believe in Santa Claus. This year however, the convictions of both mother and child are challenged when the kindly old man (Edmund Gwenn) hired as the store Santa insists that he is in fact the real thing. No one believes him, some even think he's insane, but he is willing to go to court to prove his case. Finally, in 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' (1968), inventor Caractacus Potts (Dick Van Dyke) acquires a run-down racing car and renovates it for his children, Jeremy (Adrian Hall) and Jemima (Heather Ripley), making a few extra improvements along the way. The car, christened Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, now has the ability to fly, and takes the Potts and their friend, Truly Scrumptious (Sally Ann Howes) on an exciting adventure. Arriving in the kingdom of wicked Baron Bomburst (Gert Frobe), they find themselves pursued by the evil Child Catcher (Robert Helpmann), while the Baron, desperate to get his hands on the car, kidnaps Jeremy and Jemima's grandfather (Lionel Jeffries) by mistake.

Smiley returns once again to his old department in 'Smiley's People' (1982) following the murder of his friend, General Vladimir, a Russian who once worked for British Intelligence. When it transpires that Vladimir was in fact a double agent, Smiley becomes engaged in a battle of wills with his old adversaries at the Moscow Centre.

The streets of Gotham City are no longer safe for criminals, who are being picked off by a masked vigilante in a rubber suit - dubbed 'Batman' by the press. In 'Batman Returns' (1992), Oswald Cobblepot was abandoned by his parents as a baby. Thirty three years later, bent on revenge, he returns to Gotham City as the Penguin (Danny DeVito). First he begins a warped campaign to become Mayor, helped by millionaire businessman Max Shreck (Christopher Walken); next, he undertakes a mission to murder every first born son in Gotham - a plan which will avenge his own beginnings. Meanwhile, he has two adversaries to contend with: Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer), the embittered ex-secretary of Max Shreck, and, of course, the old caped crusader himself (Keaton). In 'Batman Forever' (1995), former District Attorney Harvey Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones) is terrorising Gotham City, when a new villain appears on the scene - the Riddler (Jim Carrey). 'Finally, in 'Batman and Robin' (1997), Batman (George Clooney) and Robin (O'Donnell) have to stop the vengeful Mr Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger) from taking over Gotham City by using his new ice weapon. To make matters worse, the venomous Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman) decides to join forces with Freeze, so making an almost undefeatable double-whammy of a team. Box set featuring six Shakespeare adaptations starring legendary actor Laurence Olivier. In 'King Lear' (1983), the ageing King Lear (Olivier) decides to split his kingdom between three daughters - Regan, Cordelia and Goneril - with each receiving a share appropriate to the amount of love they feel for him. However, when the faithful Cordelia refuses to protest her devotion, an enraged Lear foolishly cedes complete control to the devious remaining siblings - with terrible results. In 'Henry V' (1944), the young king (Olivier) puts his rakish past behind him and rallies his men to invade France, winning against the enemy's superior numbers. The film was shot in Ireland to avoid the constant bombardment of the Blitz and Olivier was discharged from the Navy to make the film. In 'Hamlet' (1948), Hamlet (Olivier), Prince of Denmark, is still mourning over the death of his father and his mother Gertrude's (Eileen Herlie) subsequent remarriage to Hamlet's despised uncle, Claudius (Basil Sydney), who is now King. When his father's ghost appears to Hamlet and reveals that it was Claudius who murdered him, the young prince vows revenge. However, a fatal flaw in his character - hesitation - mars his efforts, resulting in murder, madness and treachery. In 'The Merchant of Venice' (1974), Jewish moneylender Shylock (Olivier) provides young Antonio (Anthony Nichols) with a loan, stating that if it is not repaid he will claim a pound of flesh. When Antonio's bond defaults, Shylock attempts to claim his grisly compensation in a court of law, but Portia (Joan Plowright) pleads Antonio's case. In 'Richard III' (1955), Olivier stars as the cold and calculating king, a treacherous and untrustworthy fellow who makes plans to kill anyone who threatens his position. Henry Stafford (Ralph Richardson), the Duke of Clarence (John Gielgud) and Lady Anne Neville (Claire Bloom) are just some of those moving in his orbit. 'As You Like It' (1936) was filmed in England in 1936 when Olivier was still considered a promising young actor rather than one of the finest thespians ever, as he would later become, this is his first filmed Shakespeare performance and thus a milestone in film history.
