Study Skills Second edition is a complete course for students who
are currently attending a university or college or who hope to
begin university or college studies soon. The course covers reading
academic texts efficiently and effectively; taking notes from
lectures and books; doing basic research; using library or
computer-based resources; writing academic papers; taking part in
discussions; presenting papers; managing study time and preparing
for examinations For self-study purposes materials from the Tutor's
Book (previously published separately) have been incorporated to
form one combined student-friendly text.
This is a complete course in study skills for students in further
and higher education institutions. Skills taught include: improving
reading efficiency; note-taking; preparing for seminars; research
techniques; essay organization and presentation; exam preparation.
One unit also deals with the social aspects of studying in Britain.
The emphasis is on student activity and realistic practical work.
To make the course as flexible as possible, suggestions are given
in the Tutor's Book for 'full-time' and 'minimum time' allocations
within each unit. Full-time allocations give about 90 classroom
hours; the shorter programme can be completed in about 50 hours.
The Tutor's Book also provides suggestions for further reading and
answers to the exercises. Answers are also given in the Student's
Book, so making it possible for most of the course to be used for
individual study. The cassette recording contains the lecture
material for Unit 3 Taking Notes.
The notion of the teacher as "reflective practitioner" is gaining ground as a powerful concept in teacher education and teacher development. One of the strengths of this approach is that it draws on the experience of a wide range of professions. Another is that it can help break down the gap between theory and practice that is all too often a major source of criticism of teacher education courses. The concept of the reflective practitioner can be applied to many aspects of teacher education including teacher supervision, teaching practice, microteaching, action research, groupwork, teacher assessment, and course design. Training Foreign Language Teachers deals with this important topic in a very lucid and straightforward way. It contains many suggestions for practical work and discussion, and numerous applications to actual situations, including an extended case study. The activities are firmly placed within the framework of a coherent approach to language teacher education. This book is aimed at anyone in the area of foreign language teaching who is engaged in designing, running or taking part in any of the following kinds of professional activities: teacher education courses, in-service training courses, supervision or inspection programs, advisory programs for teachers, staff development programs, and self-development programs. Training Foreign Language Teachers will be ideal as a core-text for MA courses with a teacher education focus.
The concept of a non-liberal China continuing to grow anywhere near
its current rates economically and militarily is viewed with a
mixture of reactions: from fear to acceptance, to skepticism and
cynicism, and an outright desire to stop it from happening. With
about 21% of the world's population, China has the potential to
exert a tremendous influence in the international scene as the
state of flux recedes and the next world order emerges. The Pacific
Rim continues to grow in importance to the United States, as
delineated in the most recent National Security Strategy.
Understanding the political, cultural, and warfare philosophy of
China will aid immeasurably to charting the future course to take
in the relations assuming China continues to rise in power. A
suitable framework, furnished by relevant theories fashioned in
light of the dynamic and complex world, is necessary to facilitate
the navigation through the underlying sources of conflict. Two
modern-day theorists, Doyle and Huntington, have significantly
contributed to differing aspects that are worth considering in
regard to potential conflict between the US and China over
miscommunications and misperceptions. Doyle looks at the inherent
tensions between powerful liberal and non-liberal states. Many
missed opportunities to pursue mutual advancement of strategic
interests and a general reduction in tensions through accommodation
is evident.
A quote attributed to P. A. M. Dirac states that the first chapter
of quantum mechanics needs to be completed. The starting point in
classical mechanics is considered a free particle's rest state, and
this should also be the starting point for quantum mechanics.
However, this starting point assumes mass is an intrinsic property
of matter which is not necessarily true. The authors stumbled on a
few analytical missteps, corrected these missteps and found that a
different picture of mass emerges. The misconception that quantum
behavior is only restricted to a small scale is eliminated in this
view. A new quantum wave equation capable of describing a quantum
particle's rest state and mass evolved from the change in
perspective. Applying these concepts about mass to the photon on a
large scale yields some new activities for the photon and some
different explanations to some old problems in cosmology and
astronomy. Our book is structured so that a general reader will
come away with a good understanding of why this work was performed
and how it was accomplished. The readers will then be able to
consider for themselves the results and how they affect the
concepts of measurement, time and self energy. A detailed guide has
been provided at the end with the main background reading. (c)

This practical guide can be used by teachers who wish to develop their professional expertise by investigating their own teaching in a systematic and organised way. It is also invaluable for teachers or trainee teachers who have to produce a professional project or dissertation as part of a training programme. This book will help teachers to design and implement a research project which is derived from their normal practice, with results which should be of direct relevance to them. The book is user-friendly and includes:- exemplar articles and extracts which show how the research techniques can be implemented- 'Personal review' sections which help readers to think about the ideas being discussed and relate them to their own situation- commentaries which follow up issues raised in the 'Personal review' sections- chapter summaries- a glossary of all technical terms
