Im 16. Jahrhundert begann eine gesellschaftliche Bewegung, deren Namen noch heute Entsetzen und Schrecken auslost: die Zeit der Hexenverfolgung. Unzahlige Frauen, aber auch Manner wurden verfolgt, gefoltert und landeten auf dem Scheiterhaufen, die in ganz Europa lichterloh brannten, jedoch besonders in Deutschland. Sohne und Tochter verrieten ihre Eltern, Mutter ihre Kinder und Hexenjager bereisten das Land auf der Suche nach, wie wir heute wissen, unschuldigen Opfern. Die Forschung spricht heute von etwa 3 Millionen angeklagten Menschen, von denen 40.000 bis 60.000 hingerichtet wurden. Der Autor geht den Ursachen fur diese oft "Hexenwahn" genannte Erscheinung in der intensivsten Phase von 1560-1630 nach und untersucht dabei umweltbedingte, wirtschaftliche, psychologische, soziale und religiose Aspekte. Dabei werden heutige oft zu horende, leider pauschalierte und klischeeorientierte Behauptungen hinterfragt und nicht zuletzt die Lebensrealitat der Menschen im Zeitraum der Hexenverfolgung berucksichtigt. Dieses Essay wurde im Rahmen eines Hauptseminar zum Thema "Krieg und Frieden in Europa" als wissenschaftliche Arbeit erstellt.
