Engineering in Space: Adventures of an Astronaut Engineer is an
exciting look into space through the eyes of an engineer. From
lift-off to touch-down, engineering principles are integrated with
a first-hand account of the beauty of space. This fascinating story
uses rhyming and rhythm to creatively engage the reader on a
journey through space.
As engineering professors, we have both been teaching at the
university level and conducting research in nanotechnology and
engineering education for several years. After having our families,
we have discovered that there is a lack of children's books on
engineering geared toward young children ages 4-8. Engineering
education is a growing issue in our nation, and all research points
towards engaging children in engineering concepts when they are at
these young, impressionable ages. We have developed this children's
book on engineering targeted for ages 4-8 based on experiences that
we have had in engineering education and research. Our goal with
this book is to show children some exciting things that engineers
design and engage them through humor and their own creativity.
Advancements in nanotechnology for material processing via
combustion synthesis have spurred the development of superalloys
that provide improved protective properties. Nano-scale reactant
particles offer increased homogeneity that improve the
micro-structural features and macroscopic properties of the
synthesized product. This book examines the use of self-propagating
high-temperature synthesis as a practical alternative to the
conventional methods for alloy production. Several important issues
pertaining to nanostructured metallic alloys will be discussed such
as: incorporation of a nanoscale particulate additive to increase
performance properties, activation energy and ignition behavior of
nanocomposites compared with traditional alloys, and the production
of a highly porous, nanostructured, heat-insulating metallic alloy.
This book delivers unique analysis and experimental design
solutions needed to conceptualize and produce nanostructed
intermetallics. It is an indispensible resource for students,
researchers, and practicing engineers working with materials and
nanotechnology.
