Various Perspectives in Fisheries Management and Protection (Paperback): Mohamed Megahed Various Perspectives in Fisheries Management and Protection (Paperback)
Mohamed Megahed
R1,741 Discovery Miles 17 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book aims to provide the fisheries manager with tools and innovative solutions to achieve the main task of balancing the pressure on the fish stocks and fishing zones. By bringing stakeholders together to share experiences, learn together and contribute to decision making processes and everyone see his point of view reflected in the policy. Also, this book deals with fisheries governance and fisheries management. Discuss challenges that fisheries governance face and explore ways to strengthen fisheries governance. The book provides insights and skills to bring stakeholders in the fisheries system and help them understand each other's perspectives, manage their conflicts and learn together. The book materials are interactive and readers will practice a range of participatory tools and methodologies in a real-life case. The readers will finally able to apply the concepts learned by presenting an action plan for their own professional situation. Finally, the readers will know about fisheries governance and co-management concepts, challenges faced in governance and management.

Development of Marine Shrimp Farming in Sinai, Egypt (Paperback): Mohamed Megahed Development of Marine Shrimp Farming in Sinai, Egypt (Paperback)

Freshwater Fish Farming (Paperback): Mohamed Megahed Freshwater Fish Farming (Paperback)
Mohamed Megahed
R1,742 Discovery Miles 17 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The objective of this Book is to estimate the potential for freshwater fish farming (Tilapia, Catfish, Eels, Crap and Salmon) in order to stimulate improved planning for aquaculture development and to provide a tool to plan comprehensively for technical assistance in fish farming activities. Development of aquaculture holds the most promise for improving food security through increasing the supply of fish. Also, focus on Pond construction, pen farming, production of fish fry and management.

Application of Genetics in Shrimp Farming (Paperback): Mohamed Megahed Application of Genetics in Shrimp Farming (Paperback)
Mohamed Megahed
R1,600 Discovery Miles 16 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Studies of genetic variation within and among species of penaeid shrimp in nature are of interest to culturists. They provide information about genetic differences among potential founder populations for initiation of aquaculture stocks. In aquaculture, the application of genetic techniques provides opportunities to maximize the benefits of selective breeding, develop new strains of species, including hybrids, maintain genetic vigor in farmed stocks and provide an early warning system for possible undesired inbreeding, explore the potential of genetically enhanced traits such as improved growth rates and disease resistance.

Genomic data analysis (Paperback): Mohamed Megahed Genomic data analysis (Paperback)
Mohamed Megahed
R1,609 Discovery Miles 16 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book covers some important methods for the analysis of micro-array data and QTL. It is also considered important that readers learn to read and understand the relevant literature, because it is a fast moving subject field. R and Bioconductor used in this book. The student can explore the dependencies and the structure in a large multivariate data set, and can apply the multivariate methods correctly. The reader can also analyze micro-arrays and he/she known the basics of QTL, linkage analysis and association studies. The reader is able to read and understand the relevant literature. Multivariate data analysis is basically a collection of many statistical methods that are applicable to large and/or high dimensional data sets. All methods that are covered in this book, are often applied in industry and research institutions.

Tilapia Selective Breeding Programs and Genetic Improvement In Egypt (Paperback): Mohamed Megahed Tilapia Selective Breeding Programs and Genetic Improvement In Egypt (Paperback)
Mohamed Megahed
R1,467 Discovery Miles 14 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Two strains of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, were developed through mass and pedigreed selection techniques. Performance of the mass-selected line has been tested against a control and commercial lines used by the farmers. On station testing indicated an improvement of 35% over the control, the base population, from which the selected O. niloticus stock was developed. In an initial farm trial, the improved O. niloticus stock performed 51% better than the commercial line that is regularly distributed by a commercial hatchery to the local farmers. Additional farm testing of the mass-selected line is still in progress. The mass-selected line is currently being evaluated against the pedigree selected line. The best candidates will be identified and used in the pedigree selection program.

How do aquatic organisms function? (Paperback): Mohamed Megahed How do aquatic organisms function? (Paperback)
Mohamed Megahed
R1,979 Discovery Miles 19 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book takes a fundamental, biophysical approach toward animal physiology. Shows the progressive changes, modifications, and developments of physiological systems from simple to complex animals. Comparisons show the similarities and differences in how animals function, but stress fundamentally similar adaptations in very different animals. Also, provide comparative physiology of animals, in a strongly environmental context. It provides full analysis of the basic principles of physiological adaptations, in both vertebrates and invertebrates and how they allow integration with the environment, detailed and integrated reviews of how animals sense, react to and cope with particular environments - the marine and freshwater worlds, the particularly challenging seashore and estuarine zones, the different kinds of terrestrial habitat, and the parasitic environment. Integrated with ecological principles and with behavioural responses used by animals in coping with environmental challenges. This book provides a stand-alone core text for undergraduate and graduate courses in comparative physiology, animal physiology, or environmental physiology and environmental biology.

Standard Operating Procedure for Marine Shrimp Hatcheries and Farms (Paperback): Mohamed Megahed Standard Operating Procedure for Marine Shrimp Hatcheries and Farms (Paperback)
Mohamed Megahed
R1,675 Discovery Miles 16 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

From the practical work and applied research work in the field of marine shrimp farming, this Standard Operating Procedure (S.O.P) was developed. This S.O.P. documents actual procedures being used at the time of its production. It will be used both as a guide for current hatchery and farm operations and as a tool to allow the identification of areas where improvements can be made. These improvements will gradually be incorporated into the updated S.O.P. All Hatchery and farm division staff should read and understand this S.O.P.It is hoped that this S.O.P will partly help solve the problems encountered in shrimp farming and contribute towards better marine shrimp management and a more sustainable farming industry.

Tilapia Genetic Resources in Suez Canal Zone - Egypt (Paperback): Mohamed Megahed Tilapia Genetic Resources in Suez Canal Zone - Egypt (Paperback)
Mohamed Megahed
R1,463 Discovery Miles 14 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Information on the genetic structure of economically important fish species is essential for fisheries management and fish farming. DNA markers used in this study was successful in estimating genetic variation and species differentiation in four species of Egyptian tilapia and are of potential use in tilapia breeding programs. DNA profiles generated in each species of tilapia were unique. Genetic improvement of animals is limited by the fact that most traits of economically importance are polygenic in nature and are influenced by a variety of environmental and genetic factors. These markers can be used in monitoring QTL loci during selection programs. Markers linked to simple commercially important genetic traits such as disease resistance genes can also be identified from natural resources and introgressed into domestic strains. This study can be used as a baseline study for researcher and fish breeders who are interested in evaluating tilapia genetic resources and its potential use in developing selective breeding programs.
