As one of the most successful fashion houses in existence, Chanel
owes much to the templates first laid down by its founder -
Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel (1883-1971). Some of her most celebrated
designs, such as the two-piece suit, the little black dress and the
quilted handbag, remain in vogue to this day. Chanel designed first
and foremost for herself: by creating clothes fit for an
independent and active lifestyle, she anticipated the needs and
wants of the modern woman. This beautiful book showcases a stunning
array of Chanel's most notable designs from her 60 years in
fashion, largely drawn from the collections of the Chanel
Patrimoine, Paris and the V&A. It examines the cut,
construction, embellishment and provenance of the ensembles, as
well as the design themes and motifs Chanel returned to throughout
her career. Newly commissioned photographs of the selected pieces,
together with archival images, capture the design evolution of thie
fashion icon.

This thesis uses a systems-level approach to study the cellular
metabolism, unveiling new mechanisms and responses that were
impossible to reach with traditional reductionists procedures. The
results reported here have a potential application in areas like
metabolic engineering and disease treatment. They could also be
used in determining the accuracy of the gene essentiality of new
genome-scale reconstructions. Different methods and techniques,
within the contexts of Systems Biology and the field known as
Complex Networks Analysis have been applied in this work to show
different features of the robustness of metabolic networks. The
specific issues addressed here range from pure topological aspec ts
of the networks themselves to the balance of biochemical fluxes.
The book analyzes the impact of urban movements on government and
public policies in a context of rapid urban transformations, public
policy crises and increasing social inequalities. The essays show
how the impact of the movements is increasing and has effects both
in the orientation of the policies, as in their form of management
and its effects. The authors are leading scholars from universities
and research centers in Spain, Italy, Portugal, France, Germany and
the United Kingdom.
Bunny is almost toilet trained, but pooping on the toilet is still
tricky. After a few hops and plops, Bunny starts to figure it out
in this light-hearted board book.
This bibliography on federal policy on aging deals not only with
official actions taken by government but also with the issues that
cause such actions to be taken or, at least, proposed. Dealing with
a period beginning with 1960, when public support of national
action on social insurance and other aging-related matters was
mounting, this bibliography's entries cover the years through early
1986, taking due note of the contemporary wave of analyses
protesting perceived inequities in social security and medicare
provisions. The 162 entries in Part One annotate book-length or
other evaluations declaring the failure, partial success, or
considerable achievement of federal action that intended to make
life better for older Americans. In addition to global appraisals,
Part One offers entries dealing with key principles in the making
of federal policy on aging. The 589 entries that comprise Part Two
provide a comprehensive sampling of the policies, programs, and
issues of importance in the study of aging and older Americans.
Among the issues related to federal public policy on aging that are
covered are: income and retirement policy, health and long-term
care, housing, services, consumer issues, discrimination,
education, empowerment, family policy, intergenerational concerns,
minorities, research, rural programs, training, and women. An
appendix dealing with sources of additional information and author
and subject indexes complete this volume. This important new
bibliography adds to our knowledge of sources for the study of
federal policy-making and the elderly.
This book explores how the EU, as an international actor, is
adapting to recent transformations in the multilateral system. The
international identity of the European Union is built upon its
support for effective multilateralism and its commitment to core
norms and values. Until recently, there was no need to choose
between these goals. Emerging powers in the international system
are not only demanding more power in multilateral institutions, but
also sometimes seeking to influence their purpose and function,
away from those championed by the EU. This presents a dilemma for
EU foreign policy - framed in this edited volume as either
accommodating changes in order to support multilateral institutions
or entrenching the EU position in order to uphold values. Using a
common analytical framework, the chapters include case studies on
important multilateral institutions such as the United Nations
Security Council, the International Monetary Fund, the World Trade
Organization and the International Criminal Court, as well as key
policy areas such as energy, climate change, nuclear
non-proliferation, and human rights.
This book presents the singular configurations associated with a
robot mechanism, together with robust methods for their
computation, interpretation, and avoidance path planning. Having
such methods is essential as singularities generally pose problems
to the normal operation of a robot, but also determine the
workspaces and motion impediments of its underlying mechanical
structure. A distinctive feature of this volume is that the methods
are applicable to nonredundant mechanisms of general architecture,
defined by planar or spatial kinematic chains interconnected in an
arbitrary way. Moreover, singularities are interpreted as
silhouettes of the configuration space when seen from the input or
output spaces. This leads to a powerful image that explains the
consequences of traversing singular configurations, and all the
rich information that can be extracted from them. The problems are
solved by means of effective branch-and-prune and numerical
continuation methods that are of independent interest in
themselves. The theory can be put into practice as well: a
companion web page gives open access to implementations of the
algorithms and the corresponding input files. Using them, the
reader can gain hands-on experience on the topic, or analyse new
mechanisms beyond those examined in the text. Overall, the book
contributes new tools for robot design, and constitutes a single
reference source of knowledge that is otherwise dispersed in the
literature.
This book covers the ultrafiltration membranes, specifically
focusing on the elements that are produced using PVDF technology
and out-side-in configuration. It specifically targets
ultrafiltration technology as a pretreatment of seawater reverse
osmosis desalination process. However, what is described in the
book can be leveraged in other ultrafiltration membrane types. It
explains how to significantly improve the efficiency of the
process.
It used to be difficult to reliably fabricate clean
heterostructures using magnetic and superconducting layers. Today
this is no longer the case; such reproducible
superconductor/ferromagnet heterostructures enable the quantitative
study of the rich and varied phenomena associated with
ferromagnet/superconductor proximity effects. These structures are
eminent, suitable candidates for many switching devices, ranging
from non-volatile low power memory elements to quantum computing
applications involving Josephson junctions. This book's main purpose
is to explain how the equilibrium and transport properties of these
heterostructures can be accurately calculated starting from a
standard BCS type Hamiltonian. The main techniques, including both
analytical and numerical methods, are discussed in detail. Results
obtained from these calculations are shown to be in excellent
quantitative agreement with experiment. This is a theory book, but
the theory is neither abstruse nor esoteric. Knowledge of only
introductory graduate physics has been assumed; a solid
undergraduate training and a bit of perseverance would also be
enough. This book can easily be read and understood by
experimentalists, and just about anybody can grasp the basics by
referring to the figures and explanations. Quite apart from the
manifold applications of superconductor/ferromagnet nanostructures,
studying them provides us with considerable insights into
fundamental physics and the general study of hybrid nanomaterials.
"Design Rules for Actuators in Active Mechanical Systems" deals
with the formulation of model-based design rules to be used in the
conception of optimized mechatronic and adaptronic systems. The
book addresses the comparison of different actuator classes for
given applications and offers answers to the following questions:
What is the relationship between actuator geometry and primary
output quantities? How scalable are actuators based on the same
principle? How are energetic output quantities (work and power)
related to mechanical load and geometry? How should actuators be
designed and sized to obtain the best performance for the chosen
actuator kind, and for a given application?
"Design Rules for Actuators in Active Mechanical Systems" will
be of use to industry professionals, such as actuator and machine
designers, as well as to researchers and students of mechanical
engineering, mechatronics, and electrical engineering.

When a customer, employee, or investor is faced with a choice of
companies amidst a sea of competitors, they increasingly consider
how responsible that organization is. Customers want to buy ethical
and sustainable; employees want to feel a sense of purpose at work,
and investors need reassurance that their investments are good for
the long term. To be competitive and valuable to society, firms
need to develop an organizational conscience that drives key
strategic decisions and spurs sustainable and responsible
innovation. In this book, the authors argue that organizations need
to think critically about their role and to use their conscience to
guide actions. With plenty of concrete suggestions based on
substantive research, it shows how firms can reconcile the
competing interests of stakeholders, create an organization that is
fair, open and transparent and do the right thing while building a
profitable business. With integrated videos and international case
studies featuring multinational companies as well as small firms,
this book explains how firms can make the transition to becoming
conscientious.
