This book presents and discusses a strategy which includes four
approaches to dealing with the risk of sea-level rise and other
water hazards. It also offers opportunities for cities to explore
urban extensions such as marine estates, aquatic food production
systems, new sea related industries, maritime transport
developments, new oceanic tourist attractions, and the designation
of additional coastal ecological zones. The urban interface between
Sea and Cities generates, therefore, both burning issues and
valuable opportunities and raises the question of whether it is
possible to solve the former by exploiting the latter?
Disruptive Urbanism examines how different forms and modes of the
so called "sharing economy" are manifesting in cities and regions
throughout the world, and how policy makers are responding to these
disruptions. The emergence of the so called "sharing economy" and
the "disruptive technologies" have profound implications for urban
policy and governance. Initial expectations that "sharing" of
homes, offices or vehicles could solve urban problems such as
congestion or housing affordability have given way to concerns over
job precarity, neighbourhood transformation, and the growing power
of platforms in disrupting urban governance and regulation.
Contributors to this volume canvas these issues, examining how the
"sharing economy" is manifesting in urban areas, the implications
of this for urban living, and how policy makers are responding to
these changes. Implications for urban research, policy, and
practice are highlighted through chapters which address forms of
urban "sharing" across housing, transport, work, and food and wider
processes of globalisation and neoliberalism as they disrupt cities
and urban policy making. Disruptive Urbanism will be of great
interest to scholars of urban planning, urban governance, the
sharing economy, and housing studies. The chapters were originally
published as a special issue of Urban Policy and Research.
Directly elected mayors are political leaders who are selected
directly by citizens and head multi-functional local government
authorities. This book examines the contexts, features and debates
around this model of leadership, and how in practice political
leadership is exercised through it. The book draws on examples from
Europe, the US, and Australasia to examine the impacts, practices,
and debates of mayoral leadership in different cities and
countries. Themes that recur throughout include the formal and
informal powers that mayors exercise, their relationships with
other actors in governance - both inside municipalities and in
broader governance networks - and the advantages and disadvantages
of the mayoral model. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches
are used to build a picture of views of and on directly elected
mayors in different contexts from across the globe. This book will
be a valuable resource for those studying or researching public
policy, public management, urban studies, politics, law, and
planning.

Genetic epidemiology is a very rapidly developing field that has
acquired a central role in modern biomedical science. Driven by
fast-paced technological advances arising from the sequencing of
the human genome, and the rolling-out of these technologies into
population-based studies, remarkable advances have occurred
recently in our ability to detect genetic polymorphisms which
contribute to susceptibility to complex human disease. This new
science has begun to transform epidemiology, clinical medicine, and
public health. Epidemiologists and public health students who in
the past only had to learn a minimum of genetics are now required
to acquire more detailed knowledge of the field, yet until now
there has been no text set at the appropriate introductory level.
This book brings together leading international experts to provide
an introduction to genetic epidemiology that begins with a primer
in human molecular genetics (requiring no prior specialist
knowledge) and then examines all the standard methods in population
genetics and genetic epidemiology required for an adequate
grounding in the field. Among much else, the book contains
discussion of the public health aspects of the new genetics, and of
epidemiological methods for studying genes and environmental
factors in complex diseases. Supplemented by a glossary and
in-chapter guides to further reading, this introduction to genetic
epidemiology will be widely welcomed by teachers and students on a
burgeoning number of courses across the world.
Dean Burton is not an author per se, but a man who felt compelled
to tell his story. After meeting an intriguing woman on the
Internet, who would later become his wife, he began a relationship
that started out with promise and slowly turned into a nightmarish
dysfunctional dance. Over time, his wife's emotional outbursts and
abusive behavior led him to discover that she most likely suffered
from borderline personality disorder, or BPD. His reasons for
staying in such a hopeless relationship would eventually lead him
to discover his own emotional deficiencies. DREAMS DESCENDING...MY
JOURNEY TO THE BORDERLINE AND BACK is an honest, albeit harrowing
chronicle of an extremely chaotic period in the author's life, but
ultimately a story of survival and self-discovery. Burton's memoir
was partially compiled from a collection of journal entries,
emails, blogs, voice messages, and tape recordings, as well as his
own remembrances. "Dean Paul Burton has encapsulated-in all its
pain, confusion and horror-the experiences of a partner to someone
with borderline personality disorder." Lynn Melville Author,

If you find media at all levels fascinating, you'll enjoy Tales
from the Newsrooms: An Offbeat Look, by Paul Burton. Displaying his
trademark feistiness, Paul shares many newsroom stories from his
years as an editor and reporter in the U.S. Northeast at the local,
regional and international levels. He shares examples of bad
writing he has encountered, employees of all kinds and how he has
handled them, and some of the zaniest readers, sources and other
people imaginable. Non-journalists will also appreciate Paul's
accounts of personnel moves. Paul shares memories of his interviews
with major newsmakers, and his dealings with editors and writers.
He recalls his less brilliant moments, too. After reading Tales
from the Newsrooms: An Offbeat Look, you'll see journalism in a
completely different light.
