Velimir Khlebnikov - A Critical Study (Paperback, New ed): Raymond Cooke Velimir Khlebnikov - A Critical Study (Paperback, New ed)
Raymond Cooke
R971 Discovery Miles 9 710 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Khlebnikov is becoming recognized as one of the major Russian poets of the twentieth century, having for years been dismissed as a purveyor of unintelligible verbal trickery. This book provides a broad survey of his work. Dr Cooke's aim is to be both informative and interpretative by mapping out the contours of Khlebnikov's still largely uncharted poetic world. He highlights the complex relations between the poet and his public, draws attention to Khlebnikov's preoccupation with the meaning as well as the poetry of language, points to the significance of images of war and conflict in his work, and shows how the figure of the poet-warrior can metamorphose into the poet-prophet. There is also an examination of the vexed problem of Khlebnikov's attitudes towards his manuscripts and his concept of the book.

In 1925, Elsie Cuthbertson sailed to China to become a missionary. She met and married Clifford Cook, also a missionary. Enduring hostility when the Chinese shouted ""Yang kuei tsi"" ("foreign devils") at them in the street, they knew the dangers of the changing political spectrum. Under the Kuomintang, anti-Western demonstrations were common. They had to escape by barge, return and flee again from the Japanese invasion by hitching a ride in an American pilot's plane. They suffered poverty, lack of medical care and the death of their own infants from lack of hygiene with remarkable equanimity. A record of values and times forever gone.

Raymond Cook, born in China, is the son of Elsie and Clifford Cook.

Research Paper from the year 2011 in the subject Economics - Finance, printed single-sided, grade: A, University of Newcastle, language: English, abstract: During the past two decades, China's economy has been growing rapidly, so has the inflation rate. This research focuses on the relationship between China's inflation rate and economic growth. There are three sub-questions, consisting of whether there is a significant correlation between China's inflation and economic growth, whether there is a cause-and-effect relationship between China's inflation and economic growth, and how time factor influences their relationship. The result will be helpful for the government to find a way in order to achieve high economic growth and low inflation. After reviewing empirical literature, we know that as the dada and methods differ, different researchers have generated different conclusions regarding the relationship between inflation and economic growth. In this research, we use CPI to measure inflation rate and GDP growth rate to measure economic growth rate. All the data are collected from the National Bureau of Statistics of China. We use three methods to analyse data, including the Correlation Coefficient test, the Granger Causality test as well as the VAR model analysis. The result turns out to be that there is a bidirectional causality relationship between inflation and economy growth, but the relationship is not so strong because CPI is not solely driven by GDP. At last, we have come up with three recommendations: firstly, change their model of economic development; secondly, use the monetary policies; thirdly, monitor and predict people's expectation of inflation.
