A young man struggling to find the lasting love and happiness he
yearns for after a disastrous start to life, defends his daughter
against sexual abuse and is soon on the run from a murder charge.
He flees across Europe and takes refuge in North Africa, right at
the start of the brutal Arab Spring uprising of 2010/11. This
tense, fast-paced thriller pulls no punches in describing how a
sidelined social misfit steps up to the mark and tries to prevail
over his past; to overcome the obstacles in his future, and at last
succeed in any way he can. It chronicles the people he meets along
the way, some of whom will stay in his heart forever, and an
unlikely love affair which persists against all odds. This book
also includes some of the animals that they and any of us could
meet on our journeys through life, and how they can so often enrich
that journey. The backdrop is the author's move to a new life in
Spain and his experiences there.

"I was deeply moved. It is a brilliant meditation on life and
death. Elegantly written and utterly original, this book will
surely endure." ROBERT OLEN BUTLER, Pulitzer Prize-winning author
of 'A Good Scent From A Strange Mountain' Robert McGowan's 'A Long
and Indeterminate Perambulation' is not a conventional piece of
storytelling. Told from the viewpoint of a 75-year-old "philosopher
artist," this novella is driven far more by character and idea than
by narrative. This book presents her diary entries following a more
or less daily walk around her neighborhood. These entries provide
consistently insightful views on the deepest of subjects...Life,
war, death and art. Poignant, thought-provoking and not
infrequently controversial, 'A Long and Indeterminate
Perambulation' is always stirring. "Heartfelt and utterly
beautiful, yet grounded in strength, integrity, and conviction.
McGowan at his very best." CHRISTINE COTE, Founder, Shanti Arts
These stories are derived of the author's ten-year struggle
(1982-1991) on behalf of the endangered South Main Street Historic
District in downtown Memphis, Tennessee. The photographs are from a
1986 series of gelatin silver photos taken by McGowan in and near
the district. The stories focus in large measure on confrontations
with inept and visionless city agencies and arts funding groups and
the frustrations inherent in seeking to work with such entities
toward district revitalization. Memphis' South Main Street Historic
District, once neglected and deteriorating, much of it on the verge
of demotion, is now, two or three decades later, a thriving,
energetic mixed commercial/residential neighborhood with a
distinctive arts vitality. SOUTH MAIN STORIES conveys to the reader
what it can be like for a neighborhood to make that transition and
will therefore be of relevance to any adventurous and determined
individuals involved in such an effort. SOUTH MAIN STORIES is
designed by the artist Terri J. Jones.

Derived of the author's Vietnam War experience, the thirty-seven
stories in this sometimes harrowing, sometimes hilarious collection
look back at the Vietnam War from a distance of forty or more
years, nearly a half-century, and via the perspectives of not only
the soldiers themselves, but also their children, spouses,
siblings, parents, friends. Nothing comparable to this collection
exists within the literature growing out of the Vietnam War. NAM is
hardly just another batch of macho war stories. These short
fictions, most of them memoir-based, neither glorify nor even
excuse war but come forward instead as eloquent testament to the
tragic lunacy of it.

This fascinating autobiography traces the life of a boy from a
northern council estate, the second son of a builder's labourer,
who challenges all accepted conventions and pre-conceptions about
his genre. Condemned to the building-sites, back-streets and
criminal courts of England he eventually fights back to avoid the
prison cell that awaits him and pursue his surprisingly diverse
talents. Traumatic childhood years lead to a violent life but his
caring, creative inner spirit is never crushed. After a brutal
beginning and early manhood there emerges at last a self-taught
professional artist, architect, poet, author and legal-advocate,
who must reach deep within himself to cope with the successive
personal tragedies which threaten to destroy him. This
no-holds-barred book 'names names' and delves deeply into every
imaginable human emotion as it races through time from the 1950s to
the present, and includes several visits to earlier history. It
will make you cry, and laugh, and question your own values in life,
and is certain to be controversial.
