In 1949, having finished with my boarding school education in the
Himalayas, I was desperate to leave Pakistan and head for England;
an impossible dream without the wherewithal to do so. But fate
intervened in the hated form of my mother's lover, a colonel in the
British Army, who gave me good cause to strike him senseless one
day. The wonderful result: my elder brother and I were despatched
to England by air, ten days later, with very little cash and
nowhere to stay. My story covers just five years of my life in the
dreary 1950s. It tells of how a member of the House of Lords
attempted to seduce me the day after I arrived in England and of my
many adventures and misadventures thereafter; the numerous,
extraordinary jobs I accepted just to survive. For example, my
involvement in hazardous experiments relating to the atomic bomb
and assessing psychopaths for a mad psychiatrist. Then, too, there
is my ambition to be a professional singer, leading from winning
talent competitions to fronting a well-known big band; an
unforgettable audition at the Windmill theatre, a film test for the
part of Romeo and a close friendship with Barbara Andrews and her
daughter, the famous Julie. Throughout, there is my obsessive
pursuit of the opposite sex and my failed attempts to lose my
virginity until...
Rooted in an international political economy theoretical framework,
this book provides unique insights into the global forces and local
responses that are shaping education systems in Central America and
the Latin Caribbean (CALC). The book covers all Spanish-speaking
countries of the CALC region and examines the effects of
macro-economic pressures, geopolitical intervention, neo-colonial
relationships, global pandemics, transnational gang networks, and
the influence of international organizations. Chapters analyse the
challenges and opportunities these global forces present to
education systems in the region as well as highlighting the local
efforts to address, mitigate, and counteract them. In doing so, the
book illuminates how education can contribute to either maintaining
or challenging inequalities and exclusion in the face of pressures
from the global to local levels.
This book brings together leading figures in democratic reform and
civic engagement to show why and how better state-citizen
cooperation is necessary for achieving positive social change.
Their contributions demonstrate that, while protest and non-state
action may have their place, citizens must also work effectively
with public bodies to secure sustainable improvements. The authors
explain why the problem of civic disengagement poses a major
threat, highlight what actions can be taken, and suggest how the
underlying obstacles to democratic cooperation between citizens and
state institutions can be overcome across a range of policy areas
and in varied national contexts.
After the Meiji Restoration of 1868 Japan modernized rapidly,
transforming itself perhaps more quickly than any other country in
history. However, the change was not without its conflicts, many of
them still unresolved as the pleasures of modern society vie with a
respect for the traditional Japanese lifestyle. As the literature
of change and of the young, science fiction acts as a window to the
modern mind and the uneasy alliance of the old and new. This book,
filled with detailed reference to numerous stories, traces the
origin and development of the genre from the mid-nineteenth century
to today, thus exploring unique insights into Japanese attitudes to
commercialism, spirituality, the media, war and international
relations.

This book offers an overview of the clinical applications of PET/MR
imaging through a case-based format. Hybrid PET/MRI provides
functional and anatomical information via one setting offering
superior imaging quality with lower radiation dose being
administered to the patient. The cases in this book focus on the
use of this technique in the diagnosis of oncologic, neurologic,
cardiovascular, infectious and inflammatory, and pediatric
diseases. Each case is presented with the patient history,
protocols, interpretation of findings, and pearls and pitfalls
accompanied by high quality PET/MR images. The major strength of
this book is the discussion of both MRI and PET findings pertinent
to each particular case. It expands the discussion of oncologic
applications of this modality through a variety of cases that
highlight staging, treatment response, and follow up. Illustrating
a spectrum of PET/MRI clinical applications, PET/MR Imaging: A
Case-Based Approach is a valuable resource for radiologists,
nuclear medicine physicians, and residents.
The Gang Life: Laugh Now, Cry Later examines the criminal gangster
mindset and offers gang prevention strategies, using real-world
examples to demonstrate a holistic approach toward combatting this
surging societal problem. The text outlines the evolution of gang
membership from a state of interest, to association, to hardcore
"O.G." (Original Gangster) status, and explores the evolution of
law enforcement's multi-pronged approach to combating criminal
street gang violence, from the catch-and-release mentality of the
1970s and 1980s to today's collaboration with private organizations
such as Boys & Girls Clubs. In-depth profiles, case studies,
and lengthy histories of gangs, gang members, and their
transformations are provided to demonstrate the deleterious effect
of gangs on society. Designed for criminal justice students and for
practitioners in the field, this text offers readers a holistic
approach toward gang prevention from three nationally awarded
educators and gang investigators.
