Sweeney Todd
Based on a 'penny dreadful' tale (which later became an urban myth) from the mid-19th Century, this musical tells the tale of Benjamin Barker (Depp), a barber who returns to London after spending years in exile for a crime he didn't commit. He soon discovers from pie-maker Mrs Lovett (Bonham Carter) that, in his absence, his wife has taken her own life and his daughter is now in the care of the man who had him sent away - the dastardly Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman). Seeking revenge and filled with a murderous rage, Barker sets up a barber's shop above Mrs Lovett's premises. Now calling himself Sweeney Todd, Barker kills off all his customers with a razor to the throat and sends their cadavers to the shop below to be used as a tasty new filling for Mrs Lovett's meat pies. What was once the worst pie shop in London quickly becomes one of the city's most popular eateries, but Barker won't be satisfied until he can lure Judge Turpin into the barber's chair...

The first British production, with Frankie Howerd, ran almost as long and spawned the TV series Up Pompeii! A Funny Thing...was only Sondheim's third musical and the first for which he wrote the score as well as the lyrics. On the first two, West Side Story and Gypsy, he had written lyrics only. It opened on Broadway in May 1962 and ran for 964 performances.

Collection of four films starring Johnny Depp. In 'The Astronaut's Wife' (1999), on a seemingly routine mission to repair a space satellite, astronaut Spencer Armacost (Depp) loses contact with Mission Control for a period of time. Once Spencer has returned to Earth his wife Jillian (Charlize Theron) falls pregnant with twin boys, but her joy is tempered by the suspicion that something terrible happened to her husband in space - something which could threaten the entire human race. In 'Dark Shadows' (2012), when playboy Barnabas Collins (Depp) breaks the heart of the beautiful Angelique Brouchard (Eva Green), an old family curse is released as Angelique, a witch, turns Barnabas into a vampire before burying him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. Returning to his former home at Collinwood Manor, he finds his estate in ruins and the dysfunctional dregs of his family in tatters. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has enlisted the services of live-in psychiatrist Dr Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter) to help with her numerous family problems - but between Elizabeth's loser brother, Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller), her rebellious teenage daughter, Carolyn Stoddard (ChloŽ Moretz), and Roger's precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath), Dr Hoffman has certainly got her work cut out. 'Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street' (2007), Tim Burton's film version of the Stephen Sondheim musical, is based on a 'penny dreadful' tale (which later became an urban myth) from the mid-19th Century. The story centres around Benjamin Barker (Depp), a barber who returns to London after spending years in exile for a crime he didn't commit. He soon discovers from pie-maker Mrs Lovett (Bonham Carter) that, in his absence, his wife has taken her own life and his daughter is now in the care of the man who had him sent away - the dastardly Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman). What was once the worst pie shop in London quickly becomes one of the city's most popular eateries, but Barker won't be satisfied until he can lure Judge Turpin into the barber's chair... In 'Don Juan DeMarco' (1994) Marlon Brando plays a psychiatrist whose last case, that of Don Juan (Depp), is his most difficult. Don Juan is the world's greatest lover, having seduced over 1000 women, and his amorous tales totally captivate the analyst, re-awakening passions which he thought had been lost forever.

Re-issued alongside rare revival of Sondheim's famous musical about the French Impressionist, Georges Seurat, starring Olivier Award-winning Daniel Evans. First staged on Broadway in 1984 and at the National Theatre in London in 1990, "Sunday in the Park with George" is an extraordinary creation even for Sondheim. Inspired by Seurat's pointillist masterpiece, "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" (which is reproduced in the book), the musical brings both Seurat and the painting to life on stage. In the second half, over a century later, Seurat's great-grandson is wrestling with the same obsession: that art comes before love, before everything. This volume contains the complete book and lyrics as well as a 50-page introduction detailing the making of the musical plus an interview with Sondheim plus "The New York Times" review in which Frank Rich called it: "audacious, haunting and...touching...The first truly modernist work of musical theatre that Broadway has ever produced". "Sunday in the Park with George" is re-issued alongside the first major revival since the premiere, starring Daniel Evans, who won an Oliver Award for another "Sondheim: Merrily We Roll Along".

Stephen Sondheim has won seven Tonys, an Academy Award, seven Grammys, a Pulitzer Prize and the Kennedy Center Honors. His career has spanned more than half a century, his lyrics have become synonymous with musical theater and popular culture, and in "Finishing the Hat"--titled after perhaps his most autobiographical song, from "Sunday in the Park with George"--Sondheim has not only collected his lyrics for the first time, he is giving readers a rare personal look into his life as well as his remarkable productions.
Along with the lyrics for all of his musicals from 1954 to 1981--including "West Side Story, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music" and "Sweeney Todd"--Sondheim treats us to never-before-published songs from each show, songs that were cut or discarded before seeing the light of day. He discusses his relationship with his mentor, Oscar Hammerstein II, and his collaborations with extraordinary talents such as Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Laurents, Ethel Merman, Richard Rodgers, Angela Lansbury, Harold Prince and a panoply of others. The anecdotes--filled with history, pointed observations and intimate details--transport us back to a time when theater was a major pillar of American culture. Best of all, Sondheim appraises his work and dissects his lyrics, as well as those of others, offering unparalleled insights into songwriting that will be studied by fans and aspiring songwriters for years to come.
Accompanying Sondheim's sparkling writing are behind-the-scenes photographs from each production, along with handwritten music and lyrics from the songwriter's personal collection.
Penetrating and surprising, poignant, funny and sometimes provocative, "Finishing the Hat" is not only an informative look at the art and craft of lyric writing, it is a history of the theater that belongs on the same literary shelf as Moss Hart's "Act One" and Arthur Miller's "Timebends." It is also a book that will leave you humming the final bars of "Merrily We Roll Along, " while eagerly anticipating the next volume, which begins with the opening lines of "Sunday in the Park with George."
