This book examines how intangible aspects of international relations - including identity, memory, representation, and symbolic perception - have helped to shape the development and contribute to the endurance of the Anglo-American special relationship. Challenging traditional interpretations of US-UK relations and breaking new ground with fresh analyses of cultural symbols, discourses, and ideologies, this volume fills important gaps in our collective understanding of the special relationship's operation and exposes new analytical spaces in which we can re-evaluate its strengths and weaknesses. Designed to breathe new life into old debates about the relationship's purported specialness, this book offers a multidisciplinary exploration of literary representations, screen representations, political representations, representations in memory, and the influence of cultural connections and constructs which have historically animated Anglo-American interaction. -- .

This book examines the European Union s contribution to providing security in Europe amidst an increasingly complex and challenging environment.
In this new and comprehensive guide to the EU's role in security since the end of the Cold War, the authors offer an explanation of EU internal and external security regimes, and argue that the Union has become an important exporter of security within its region. However, the Union s rhetorical ambitions and commitments continue to outstrip its capabilities and it lacks both a common conceptualisation of security and a meaningful, shared strategic culture. Drawing extensively on primary sources the book examines the Union s relations with the US and Russia in a time of shifting geostrategic calculations and priorities. With the EU capacity for enlargement slowing, this text presents a detailed assessment of EU security policies towards Central Europe, the Mediterranean, the Western Balkans, Eastern Europe and South Caucasus.
European Union Security will be of interest to students and scholars of the EU, security studies, and international relations."

Monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) are used in a host of electronics from cellular phones and global positioning systems to missile systems and radar. They are prized for their high performance and reliability, but they can be costly and highly difficult to produce. Proper design is the key to minimizing these problems. This practical resource is filled with real-world design techniques and rules of thumb that engineers can use on the job everyday to decrease costs and improve production quality. Emphasizing practice over theory, this handy reference is filled with photos of real MMIC designs that show how design techniques have been successfully implemented in the field. In addition to circuit design, the book covers modeling, simulation, and testing, as well as selection of the appropriate production technology. This invaluable volume offers professionals a unique look into the day-to-day practices of MMIC production and the economics associated with it.
These melodies are what all sight-reading should be about but usually are not. They use easy notes and rhythms in a most methodical, imaginative and pleasurable way, concentrating on single-line melodies in first position only. This book has one hundred melodies which could be introduced to the student from almost the very first lesson, and as the melodies get progressively more complex, the book will be useful for higher-grade students. Although the book is aimed at the grade 1-2 player, more experienced students may also find it useful to try playing the studies in higher positions.
The 9/11 terrorist attacks on the US and the subsequent intervention in Iraq have brought the debate about Anglo-American relations beyond academic circles and into the public domain. But that's just the latest facet of the 'Special Relationship': a term coined by Winston Churchill as long ago as 1946. This textbook introduces the origins and distinctive features of the Special Relationship, the justifications for its continuing importance in contemporary international relations and the disputes about its authenticity. It features innovative structure that mixes thematic, chronological and regional approaches to give a full picture of Anglo-American approaches. Split into 3 parts: 'Elements of specialness', 'Cold War Anglo-American relations' and 'Post-Cold War Anglo-American relations'. Useful features for students include timelines, a glossary and recommendations for further reading. It introduces the history, controversies and contemporary relevance of the US-UK Special Relationship.
This book provides an examination of contemporary Anglo-American relations. The 1940 Destroyers for Bases deal arguably marked the birth of an Anglo-American 'special relationship', which formed the cornerstone of Western defence against first the Axis powers and then the Soviet Union and its allies. Anglo-American relations have rarely been so intensely in the media and public spotlight for such a sustained period as they have been since 9/11. Military interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan, high-profile intelligence failings and questionable practices such as 'extraordinary rendition' have all drawn substantial scrutiny and criticism of Anglo-American relations. Familiar questions are thus being revisited: the degree of Britain's influence in Washington, the impact of Atlanticism upon Britain's relations with Europe, and the extent to which the special relationship is an unrequited British preoccupation. At the same time, other important developments have been taking place with, overall, ambiguous implications for Anglo-American relations. For instance, the nuclear relationship has been galvanised by the former Labour government's commitment to retaining Britain's deterrent, and strategic dissonance is evident between Whitehall and Washington as the latter looks increasingly to Asia and the global financial crisis has seen the Anglo-Saxon economic model under siege. The book will be of great interest to students of US and UK foreign policy, diplomacy and International Relations in general.
This book provides an examination of contemporary Anglo-American relations.
Anglo-American relations, sometimes controversially referred to as the Special Relationship, constitute arguably the most important bilateral relationship of modern times. Yet in recent years, there have been frequent pronouncements that this relationship has lost its specialness .
This volume brings together experts from Britain, Europe and North America in a long-overdue examination of contemporary Anglo-American relations that paints a somewhat different picture. The discussion ranges widely, from an analysis of the special relationship of culture and friendship, to an examination of both traditional (e.g. nuclear relations) and more recent (e.g. environment) policies. Contemporary developments are discussed in the context of longer-term trends and contributing authors draw upon a range of different disciplines, including political science, diplomacy studies, business studies and economics. Coupled with a substantive introduction and conclusion, the result is an insightful and engaging portrayal of the complex Anglo-American relationship.
The book will be of great interest to students of US and UK foreign policy, diplomacy and International Relations in general.
Author Steve Marsh has spent many years playing guitar in the folk clubs of the United Kingdom where Irish music is in abundance. This collection draws from his extensive collection of original arrangements of traditional tunes. The songs vary in style and can be grouped into sets for use in a recital program. Many of the folk songs have been handed down from generation to generation so several versions of a song may exist. Therefore, the author has taken a few liberties with the tempo and rhythmic structures of a limited number of tunes in this collection. In general, the pieces in this album range from moderate standard to difficult. In standard notation only.
This book examines Winston Churchill's role in the creation and development of the Anglo-American special relationship. Drawing together world leading and emergent scholars, this volume offers a critical celebration of Churchill's contribution to establishing the Anglo-American special relationship. Marking the seventieth anniversary of Churchill's pronouncement in 1946 of that special relationship in his famous Iron Curtain speech, the book provides new insights into old debates by drawing upon approaches and disciplines that have hitherto been marginalised or neglected. The book foregrounds agency, culture, values, ideas and the construction and representation of special Anglo-American relations, past and present. The volume covers two main themes. Firstly, it identifies key influences upon Churchill as he developed his political career, especially processes and patterns of Anglo-American convergence prior to and during World War Two. Second, it provides insights into how Churchill sought to promote a post-war Anglo-American special relationship, how he discursively constructed it and how he has remained central to that narrative to the present day. From this analysis emerges new understanding of the raw material from which Churchill conjured special UK-US relations and of how his conceptualisation of that special relationship has been shaped and re-shaped in the decades after 1946. This book will be of much interest to students of Anglo-American relations, Cold War Studies, foreign policy, international history and IR in general.
"An ideal and core choice for anyone planning the twilight years of their life."--Midwest Book Review
A plain-spoken, very accessible read, Don't Die Broke has a voice and honesty akin to Rich Dad, Poor Dad as it paints a logical argument for the preservation of assets in the final years of preparing for retirement as opposed to a risk-prone obsession with the accumulation of assets. Calling for a paradigm shift in the way we think about retirement planning, David Reindel's message is long overdue, right on the money, and will rescue readers of all ages from many a market debacle in the coming years.Immersed as we are in what looks like a long-term climate of financial uncertainty, many Boomer investors have already endured more than twenty years of cyclical market meltdowns, recessions, volatile market "adjustments," and now forecasts calling for more economic instability in the years to come. Don't Die Broke addresses pre-retiree angst, offering key solutions for investment risk and volatility. As aptly noted in the book s foreword, by Fran Tarkenton, "readers nationwide urgently need the solutions in Don t Die Broke."Designed to be a timeless source of financial perspective, the book s common-sense approach to retirement planning will provide ongoing help for everyone particularly Boomers nearing retirement who need to exchange their risk-based investment habits for preservation-based common sense. The key to Reindel's advocacy for safer retirement planning is the humble annuity, a long-misunderstood financial instrument that is about to see a major return to favor. Why have these time-honored investment tools generated so much controversy in recent years? Don t Die Broke takes a frank look at those issues, defining little-known perils facing retirement plans for an upcoming era of economic uncertainty. Reindel, a national authority on annuities, explains how they fit into a safe and sane retirement plan in language that's clear, straightforward, and focused on the needs of people whose retirement is rapidly approaching. This book is focused on ideas and concepts that will help it outlive the shelf-life of easily dated annuity guides. The comprehensive expertise Reindel displays will establish him as a teacher s teacher for professional financial planners. Given the historic validity of safe-retirement planning, this reader-friendly resource is likely to become a classic in the retirement planning genre, sure to survive the gyrations of market ups and downs, changes in annuity/insurance products, and other elements that quickly date the typical, personal-finance "how-to." Meaning: this book will survive the test of time, and the time has most definitely come for Don t Die Broke."
In an incisive and lively discussion International Relations of the EU examines both the economic and security dimensions of European Union external relations. The book adopts an innovative approach that combines International Relations with International Political Economy. Set against a backdrop of EU enlargement and disarray over military intervention in Iraq, International Relations of the EU is a timely contribution to our understanding of the Eu's role as an international actor. The text is suitable for advanced undergraduate courses in Politics and International Relations.
