Bill Paxton knew he wanted to be a marine the day his family buried
his dad, a marine who had been killed while fighting the Japanese
during the Pacific campaign of World War II. His drill instructor
in boot camp had a significant impact on him and would later be the
focus of the movie "The DI." His early years in the marines formed
the basis for his successful career; he twice served as a drill
instructor and had two tours of duty in Vietnam as a grunt. His
impact on all who he came in contact with was evident in the drive
that pushed Ken Norton, his former recruit, to become the Boxing
Heavyweight Champion of the World. Paxton received the Bronze Star
for heroic actions in Vietnam and was also awarded several Purple
Heart Medals for wounds he received in battle. Having achieved the
rank of sergeant major, he retired from active duty after thirty
years; still, he proudly says, "Retired, but still active " He has
become an icon in the marines and is one of the most well-known
marines in the San Diego area.

Freedom in the Anthropocene illuminates the Anthropocene from the
perspective of critical theory. The authors contextualize our
current ecological predicament by focusing on the issues of history
and freedom and how they relate to our present inability to render
environmental threats and degradation recognizable and
surmountable.
This book presents many innovative approaches to reducing poverty
through business commitment involvement, and leadership. Some of
these approaches may look promising now at their current level of
success but will turn out to be limited in their scalability or in
their ability to sustain themselves and endure over time. However,
all of them offer fruitful grounds for inquiry and learning. It is
our intention that sharing the learning from these projects and
initiatives from around the world will be useful to others
committed to assisting the poor in escaping from poverty -
especially by bringing the poor into productive business
activities. It is also our intention that these experiences
stimulate ideas for new directions that build upon and go beyond
the rich variety of projects and successes described by the authors
in this book. The book supports C K. Prahalad's work made available
in a number of ways including his very influential book The Fortune
at the Bottom ofthe Pyramid: Eradicating Poverty through Profits
(Wharton, 2004). Prahalad's work has called attention to creative
ways to think about the question ofpoverty and how it might be
reduced and eventually eliminated. He suggests ways. ofthinking and
acting that break many ofthe traditional rigidities that occur in
how we think about markets and business practices. Although one
theme ofPrahalad's work relates to the benefits of marketing to the
poor by supplying products better fitting the needs of low income
individuals and groups, his work also emphasizes ways in which the
poor can produce innovatively conceived and designed products for
themselves and for others. This emphasis on enabling the poor to
become productive is also presented forcefhuly in Craig and Peter
Wilson' s, Make Poverty Business: IncreaSe Profits and Reduce Risks
by Engaging with the Poor Greenleaf 2OQ6. Like Drucker, they see
the real challenge to be helping the poor find work that is
productive and sustainable. One of their contributions is their
emphasis on the importance of creating access to credit and
insurance as an important part of enabling people to achieve
productive livelihoods.
Although the title of this volume and its major focus will be on
one major aspect of global sustainability - climate change - this
volume continues with the overall framing of the series: global
sustainability is a multi-faceted, global, multi-generational,
economic, social, environmental, and cultural phenomenon and
challenge to our species.
This first volume in The Palgrave Series on Global
Sustainability addresses the pressing need to align business
practices with the requirements of a sustainable world. The book's
authors address new models for conducting business, the
implications of undertaking new approaches to business practice,
and the ways businesses are transforming and being transformed by
their environments.
This book brings together research into the process of stream
acidification and its impact on Welsh surface waters, carried out
over the past decade or so. It is perhaps surprising that not until
the 1980's was clear evidence of stream acidification assembled. In
Wales, concerns over pollution had focused water quality sampling
principally on the areas of traditional heavy industry and large
urban popula tions served by inadequate sewerage systems and sewage
disposal arrange ments. Mistakenly, it had been assumed that, with
its prevailing westerly winds, Wales would receive precipitation
substantially unpolluted by the industrial and urban emissions from
Britain and mainland Europe. Assurance of the high quality of Welsh
upland streams, the traditional nursery ground of salmonids, was
eroded particularly by studies in the vicinity of Llyn Brianne
reservoir in the catchment of the River Tywi of Central Wales.
These demonstrated a clear correspondence between the biological
quality and fisheries of streams in the catchment and aspects of
stream chemistry, par ticularly pH, aluminium and calcium on the
one hand, and catchment land use on the other. It is salutary to
record that the first signals were of an inexplicable failure of
the runs of migratory salmonids into the upper catchment, occupied
by the Llyn Brianne reservoir and its influent streams, and the
failure to restore the fishery by re-stocking with eggs and fry.
Only then did the significance of the recent decline in some other
upland lake and reservoir fisheries in Wales become apparent."

Topics for the Beltsville Symposia are selected to highlight
specific areas of research and science policy that are of concern
to scientists in the Beltsville Area as well as to the general
scientific community. Each sympo sium in the series is structured
to provide a realistic appraisal of current findings, research
progress, and relevant policy issues within the constraints
established by the organizing committee. Thus, the presentations
and dis cussions that have marked these symposia have had a strong
appeal to the broad community of scientists. Knowledge of the
diversity of living organisms is still quite limited. Since the
time of Linnaeus, about 1.7 million species have been described.
The actual number has been estimated between 5-50 million. Many
species, land races, and strains are vanishing. Clearly, the
world's scientific institutions are inadequately equipped to attain
sufficient knowledge of a significant fraction of the diverse
living forms. Also, efforts in the collection and preservation of
germplasm of plants and animals urgently need to be strengthened.
These mattes are critically important to future generations. This
symposium addresses vital concerns of biotic diversity and germ
plasm preservation from diverse perspectives. Many of the parts
provide concrete recommendations for action, and they call
attention to areas of research that must be pursued with
intensity."
In the 1960s, during the Vietnam War, there were two ways of
becoming a Marine-being drafted and choosing to join. Author Gregg
Stoner, a baby boomer in disagreement with the war, joined the
Marine Corps as a protest against the draft and with a strong
desire to avoid fighting in Vietnam. Stoner's first enlistment
began just after the Tet Offensive and was during a time when most
Marines were sent to combat. But he was the only soldier from his
platoon of eighty-five to remain stateside. The Yellow Footprints
to Hell and Back details Stoner's life in the military-from a
private in boot camp to working as a sergeant drill master.
Beginning with the first grueling experiences as a new recruit to
the immense pride at graduation, Stoner shares his inner thoughts
at what it took to become a Marine. He had joined the Marines to
avoid fighting overseas, but he gained much more than he had
imagined. Filled with abundant anecdotes, this personal memoir
relays the interesting and, at times unbelievable, stories of the
Marine Corps. It conveys the feelings and attitudes that dominated
this special time in American history.
