This book explores the intersectional aspects of caste and gender in India that contribute to the multiple marginalities and oppressions of lower castes, with particular reference to Dalits, Muslims and women. It moves beyond the conventional accounts of experiences of women in unequal social and political relationships to examine how caste as a system and ideology shapes hegemonic masculinity and feminization of work, and thus contributes to the violence against women. The volume looks at their everyday lived realities within and across diverse social and political contexts - families, education systems, labour, communities, political parties, power, social organisations, the politics of representation and the writing of the subaltern women. With a range of empirical work, it brings forth the complexities of identity politics and further analyses its limits in regional and historical frameworks. This book will be of interest to students, scholars and specialists in caste and gender studies, exclusion and discrimination studies, sociology and social anthropology, history and political science. It will also be useful to Dalit writers and people working in the development sector in India.
During the period 2000 to 2010, tea plantations in India experienced a crisis and were at the threshold of transformation, framed by conflict and turbulence. This book is an interdisciplinary and intersectional work examining the nature of victimhood and agency among women workers on tea plantations in North Bengal, India. The author views tea plantations as social spaces, rather than only economic units of production. Focusing on the lived experiences of the workers from the perspective of their multiple identities, the author uses the everyday as the entry point for understanding the exercise of agency, the negotiation of different spaces, gender roles and norms therein, as well as acts of protest. Agency and its relation to space are seen as continuums: from their everyday, hidden forms to the more overt and spectacular; from conformity and endurance to challenge and protest. Offering an understanding of the gendered nature of space and labour, this book examines the post-crisis period by mapping the workers' narratives about their lived experiences and struggles in the times of economic, political and social tumult in the tea plantations of northern West Bengal. It will be of interest to an interdisciplinary audience interested in Development Studies, Gender Studies, South Asian Studies, Social Activism and Labour Studies.

Limits of Bargaining is an original addition to the political economy analysis of capital-labour relations in the organised industrial sector in the context of economic liberalisation in India. It analyses the dynamics of the capital-labour bargaining process in the context of the changing nature of the state and market as a result of adoption of policies of liberalisation and globalisation for the last two and half decades. It examines the nature of collective bargaining and analyses the underlying structural-political conditions that shape the capital-labour relations. Based on original empirical material from West Bengal, a state long considered pro-labour, the book presents bargaining between capital and labour as endogenous to the interplay of the triad of the market, technology and the institutions of the state. It illustrates everyday interactions between labour and management, different unions and outside actors that shape collective bargaining, and highlights the negotiation, appropriations and compromises that shape bargaining at the operational level.
