This volume of proceedings contains review and research papers concerning the impact of modern dynamics in astronomy. Modern dynamics is playing an increasing role in the solution of problems raised by astronomical observations. This new relationship is being fostered by discoveries of new systems, such as the Kuiper belt, pulsar and star companions; by progress in theoretical dynamics, like KAM and Nekhorochev theories and adiabatic invariants; and by the dissemination of fast computers. The two main areas of applications which are discussed are "stellar systems", including dynamics of galaxies, and "small bodies in the solar system". In both cases the concepts and tools of chaotic motion are considered and fully discussed.

IAU Symposium 172 Dynamics, Ephemerides and Astrometry of the Solar System was held in Paris in July, 1995. 250 scientists from 33 countries attended the symposium; 24 invited lectures and 165 contributed papers were presented (117 of which were posters). The papers covered topics on celestial mechanics (chaos and evolution of the solar system, asteroids, theories of the motion of the planets, the moon and the natural satellites), methods (symplectic mappings and elliptic functions), astrometry (CCD observations, VLBI and radar observations), ephemerides (representation and numerical integration) and on the history of celestial mechanics.

At the opening of the "Third Meeting on Celestial Mechanics - CELMEC III", strong sensations hit our minds. The conference (18-22 June 2001) was being held in Villa Mondragone, a beautiful complex of buildings and gardens located within the township of Monte Porzio Catone, on the hills surrounding Rome. A former papal residence, the building has been recently restored by the University of Rome "Tor Vergata" to host academic activities and events. The conference room is called "Salone degli Svizzeri": here, Gregory XIII, on February 24, 1582, gave its sanction to the reform of the Julian calendar and declared officially in use the calendar still adopted nowadays. The magnificent high walls and tall ceiling strongly resounded, giving to our voice a peculiar Vatican sound, which took us by surprise. May be - we thought - a distant echo of the very words of Gregory XIII proclaiming the modem calendar was still haunting the room. Around us, in the audience, many countries were represented, thus indicating that the idea of putting together the three "souls" of modem Celestial Mechanics - perturbation theories, solar and stellar system studies, spaceflight dynamic- had been successful. CELMEC III is in fact the latest of a series of meetings (the first two editions took place in 1993 and 1997 in L' Aquila, Italy) whose aim is to establish a common ground among people working in Celestial Mechanics, yet belonging to different institutions such as universities, astronomical observatories, research institutes, space agencies and industries.

This symposium was devoted to a new celestial mechanics whose aim has become the study of such objects' as the planetary system, planetary rings, the asteroidal belt, meteor swarms, satellite systems, comet families, the zodiacal cloud, the preplanetary nebula, etc. When the three-body problem is considered instead of individual orbits we are, now, looking for the topology of extended regions of its phase space. This Symposium was one step in the effort to close the ties between two scientific families: the observationally-oriented scientists and the theoretically-oriented scientists.

The book provides the most recent advances of Celestial Mechanics, as provided by high-level scientists working in this field. It covers theoretical investigations as well as applications to concrete problems. Outstanding review papers are included in the book and they introduce the reader to leading subjects, like the variational approaches to find periodic orbits and the space debris polluting the circumterrestrial space.

The book is written mainly to advanced graduate and post-graduate students following courses in Perturbation Theory and Celestial Mechanics. It is also intended to serve as a guide in research work and is written in a very explicit way: all perturbation theories are given with details allowing its immediate application to real problems. In addition, they are followed by examples showing all steps of their application. The book is not intended to explore the mathematics of Hamiltonian Systems, but may be useful to mathematicians in a great deal of circumstances as a reference on the practical application of the theories. In the same way, it may be a source book on the problems of degeneracy and small divisors, which affect the use of perturbation theories as well in Celestial Mechanics as in Physics.

Modem dynamics is increasingly participating in the solution of problems raised by as tronomical observations. This new relationship is being fostered on one side by the im provements in the observations, which in recent years contributed several discoveries of new systems, such as the objects in the Kuiper belt, the pulsar and star companions, to speak only of the most striking ones, and, on the other hand, by the progresses in modem dynamics. The progresses in modem dynamics are due to two factors: the dissemination of fast computers, allowing the numerical studies of very complex systems by a large number of scientists, and the improvement in our understanding of the complex behaviour of Hamiltonian systems. KAM and Nekhorochev theories have shed a light on the subtle and surprizing interplays between regular and chaotic motions; numerical experiments and analytical approximations have shown how these peculiarities are indeed present in astronomically important systems and are instrumental in understanding their formation and evolution.

The Workshop on Chaos in Gravitational N -Body Systems was held in La Plata, Argentina, from July 31 through August 3, 1995. The School of Astronomy and Geophysics of La Plata National University, best known as La Plata Observatory, was the host institution. The Observatory (cover photo) was founded in 1883, and it has nowadays about 120 faculty members and 70 non-faculty members devoted to teaching and research in different areas of astronomy and geophysics. It was very nice to see how many people, from young students to well recognized authorities in the field, came to participate in the meeting. This audience success was due to the increasing understanding of the neces sity to gather together people from Celestial Mechanics and Stellar Dynamics to explore the problems that exist at the frontier of these two disciplines and their common interest in chaotic phenomena and integrability (the famous Argentine beef was, certainly, also an attraction!). All the papers of the present volume were refereed. Most were accepted after some revision, while some needed no change at all (compli ments to their authors!) and, sadly, a few could not be included. About half a dozen authors did not submit their contributions for publication, mainly because they were already in print elsewhere. Therefore, the special issue of Celestial Mechanics and Dynamical Astronomy includes all the invited lectures of the workshop, while the proceedings volume includes those same lectures plus the bulk of, but Bot all, the contributions to the meeting.

In the 12 years since the first discovery of an exoplanet around a main sequence star (51 Peg), more than 270 exoplanets have been detected. The proceedings of IAU Symposium 249 present the latest theoretical and observational advances in the field of exoplanet research, including the ongoing and future projects such as CoRoT and Kepler. The volume opens with a review of exoplanet detection and orbital determination techniques, before looking at the physics of gas giant atmospheres and close-in stars. The topics of planet formation, migration and the dynamical evolution of protoplanetary disks and multi-planet systems are also covered in detail. IAU S249 is a useful reference for the graduate students and researchers working in the exciting field of exoplanet study.
