Inspired by the fairytales of medieval Naples, Matteo Garrone’s Tale Of Tales is an epic vision of cinema. Hailed as a masterpiece at the Cannes Film Festival, Tale of Tales is a sumptuous, seductive and macabre re-telling of Giambattista Basile’s classic Italian fairy tales by renowned director Matteo Garrone. Comprising three wildly fantastical stories, including a queen who gives birth after eating a sea monster’s heart, an old peasant woman who finds youth after falling asleep in an enchanted forest and a proud king who raises a flea as his child, these are tales that your parents never dared tell you. Set in an epic landscape filled with a host of bizarre characters, this outlandish, grotesque and beguiling fantasy world is like nothing you’ve seen before. Gloriously shot, with a spine-tingling soundtrack by Oscar-winning composer Alexandre Desplat (The Grand Budapest Hotel, Rust & Bone), Tale Of Tales is a lavish production. Deliciously dark, wickedly funny and outrageously entertaining, these adult-only fairy tales are a breathtaking work of cinematic escapism.

Based on Peter Morgan's stage play, Ron Howard directs this dramatised account of the 1977 TV interviews between scandalised former President Richard Nixon and British talk-show host David Frost. Three years after the Watergate scandal that led to his demise, former president Richard Nixon (Frank Langella) sat down with Frost (Michael Sheen) to discuss, for the first and only time, the details of his term in the White House and his spectacular fall from grace. With the famously steely Nixon confident that he could come out tops in the encounter, and Frost's side questioning whether this was a step too far, media commentators prepared themselves for a PR exercise. But when the interviews got underway, observers were astonished when both men abandoned their usual stances, and chose to conduct an open, honest and frank exchange of views, covering all the areas of concern that had previously remained off-limits. In addition to covering the interviews themselves, the film also traces the difficulties that had to be overcome, and egos that had to massaged, before the historic events could finally take place.

Comedy is recognised as one of the most problematic areas of performance. For that reason, it is rarely written about in any systematic way. John Wright was original founder of Trestle Theatre before establishing his current company, the acclaimed Told By An Idiot (recent success: Playing the Victim). He therefore brings a wide range of experience of physical comedy to this, his first book, a unique exploration of comedy and of comedic techniques. The first part of the book is about the various kinds of laughter that can be provoked by performance. The meat of the book consists of games and exercises devised to demonstrate and investigate the whole range of comic possibilities open to a performer. The result is a deeply but satisfyingly provocative book, in which every assertion in this most subjective of fields is put to the practical test. Everyone interested in how comedy works will be thoroughly stimulated by this book, but teachers and performers will find it invaluable. |
