The existence of an early Stuart Puritan movement is reconsidered in this book. It examines the ways in which Puritan clergymen encouraged greater sociability with their like-minded colleagues, both in theory and in practice, to such an extent that they came to define themselves as a peculiar people, a community distinct from their less faithful rivals. These voluntary communal rituals encouraged a view of the world divided between us and them. This provides a context for a renewed examination of the thinking behind debates on ceremonial nonconformity and reactions to the Laudian changes of the 1630s. From this the book presents a fresh perspective on arguments about emigration and church government, arguments that proved crucial to Parliamentarian unity during the English Civil War.

Rogers's diary offers a direct and personal expression of the meaning of English Puritanism on the eve of the civil war. Samuel Rogers began his diary just before his twenty-first birthday. He was a godly minister from godly stock - his grandfather, father and uncle were all part of the Puritan Movement - and his diary begins as Samuel finishes hiseducation at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Samuel expresses his intense loneliness as chaplain to the unsatisfactory Dennys of Bishops Stortford, and his efforts to obtain comfort from the nearby godly community - including visitsto Wethersfield, where his father was lecturer. His isolation eases, and his diary ends, shortly after he is appointed chaplain to the family of Lady Mary de Vere, whose contacts with prominent members of the godly he details in his pages. The diary's unrivalled view, from a day-to-day puritan perspective, of what the 1630s were like for a godly minister 'in the battlefield' makes it a valuable record. For Rogers, everything is of religious relevance: in addition to the social detail of the diary there is also a real and persuasive revelation of the spiritual meaning of Puritanism.

David Tennant's return to the role of the hugely popular Tenth Doctor has been huge news both times it's happened for Big Finish - with news of his teaming up with Billie Piper making newspapers when it was announced. Billie Piper, famed British actor of stage and screen, and companion Rose Tyler, reprises the role for the first time since her departure in the tear-jerking Journey's End Doctor Who story on BBC1. Guest star Nicholas Briggs here provides the voices of iconic Doctor Who foe the Ice Warriors - a duty he's performed on TV too (as well as for the Daleks, Cybermen, and other creatures). Four stories set in the Eleventh Doctor era, starring Jacob Dudman: 2.1 The Evolving Dead by Doris V Sutherland. The dead stalk the corridors of research station Romeo. For a technician (dead) and her ex-boyfriend (also dead), the Doctor’s their only chance to escape. For the rest of the crew, he’s their only chance to feed. 2.2 The Day Before They Came by Daniel Blythe. In the shabby seaside town of Bayview, Kayla Worthington is sitting on the beach waiting for an alien invasion. Her patience is rewarded when an alien arrives, although he doesn’t seem to be invading. He’s called the Doctor, and he wants to buy her a cup of tea. 2.3 The Melting Pot by Christopher Cooper. Arriving on Piir to sample the local cuisine, the Doctor finds a society wildly different from the one he remembers. With violence brewing on the streets, the Doctor will have to get to the bottom of what has gone wrong on Piir, before the world tears itself apart. 2.4 A Tragical History by Tessa North. To most of the inmates in Hythe Prison, life is miserable. However, some are living out their idealised lives within its walls. Amongst the dank conditions, the Doctor is about to uncover the key to everything he could ever desire.
