Universal or Diverse Paths to English Phonology (Hardcover, Digital original): Ulrike Gut, Robert Fuchs, Eva-Maria Wunder Universal or Diverse Paths to English Phonology (Hardcover, Digital original)
Ulrike Gut, Robert Fuchs, Eva-Maria Wunder
R3,677 Discovery Miles 36 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The book is concerned with the acquisition of English phonology, both segmental and suprasegmental, by learners of English as a second language, as a third language and by speakers of a postcolonial ("new") variety of English. It focuses on the acquisition process and factors influencing it, based on insights from all three disciplines.

Bilingual Acquisition of Intonation - A Study of Children Speaking German and English (Hardcover, Reprint 2014): Ulrike Gut Bilingual Acquisition of Intonation - A Study of Children Speaking German and English (Hardcover, Reprint 2014)

This book investigates the acquisition of intonation by German/English bilingual children. Intonation is analysed both auditorily and instrumentally, and the transcription system of the British Tradition and the ToBI system in the autosegmental-metrical approach of intonation analysis are employed. Based on longitudinal data of three children comprising the ages 2 years 1 month (2;1) to 5 years 6 months (5;6), the acquisition sequence for the phonological rules and phonetic production of nucleus placement, pitch and intonational phrasing is sketched. Some phonological functions of nucleus placement and pitch such as the marking of contrast or the type of speech act are mastered as early as 2;1 whilst intonational phrasing is first used phonologically at 4;6. Mastery of the phonetic production of all three intonational systems is acquired much later, and acquisition is not completed yet at 5;6. In general, interindividual differences and a clear separation of both language systems are apparent in all children, with a considerable time lag in the acquisition of the weaker language. It is concluded that both transcription systems for intonation need to be modified for the analysis of child speech and that the autosegmental-metrical approach with its distinction between the phonological and the phonetic level proves a more flexible and descriptively valuable tool.

The Oxford Handbook of Corpus Phonology (Hardcover): Jacques Durand, Ulrike Gut, Gjert Kristoffersen The Oxford Handbook of Corpus Phonology (Hardcover)
Jacques Durand, Ulrike Gut, Gjert Kristoffersen
R4,227 Discovery Miles 42 270 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This handbook presents the first systematic account of corpus phonology - the employment of corpora, especially purpose-built phonological corpora of spoken language, for studying speakers' and listeners' acquisition and knowledge of the sound system of their native languages and the principles underlying those systems. The field combines methods and theoretical approaches from phonology, both diachronic and synchronic, phonetics, corpus linguistics, speech technology, information technology and computer science, mathematics and statistics. The book is divided into four parts: the first looks at the design, compilation, and use of phonological corpora, while the second looks at specific applications, including examples from French and Norwegian phonology, child phonological development, and second language acquisition. Part 3 looks at the tools and methods used, such as Praat and EXMARaLDA, and the final part examines a number of currently available phonological corpora in various languages, including LANCHART, LeaP, and IViE. It will appeal not only to those working with phonological corpora, but also to researchers and students of phonology and phonetics more generally, as well as to all those interested in language variation, dialectology, first and second language acquisition, and sociolinguistics.

Phonetics and Phonology in Multilingual Language Development: Ulrike Gut, Romana Kopečková, Christina Nelson Phonetics and Phonology in Multilingual Language Development

R539 Discovery Miles 5 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This Element focuses on phonetic and phonological development in multilinguals and presents a novel methodological approach to it within Complex Dynamic Systems Theory (CDST). We will show how the traditional conceptualisations of acquisition with a strong focus on linear, incremental development with a stable endpoint can be complemented by a view of language development as emergent, self-organised, context-dependent and highly variable across learners. We report on a longitudinal study involving 16 learners with L1 German, L2 English and L3 Polish. Over their ten months of learning Polish, the learners' perception and production of various speech sounds and phonological processes in all of their languages were investigated. Auditory and acoustic analyses were applied together with group and individual learner statistical analyses to trace the dynamic changes of their multilingual phonological system over time. We show how phonetic and phonological development is feature-dependent and inter-connected and how learning experience affects the process.
