Marcellus Gallio (Richard Burton) is a Roman centurion who wins the robe of the crucified Christ while gambling at the foot of the cross. At first insensitive to the beliefs of the new Christian church, Marcellus' possession of the robe soon begins to have a profound effect upon both him and his childhood sweetheart Diana (Jean Simmons). Meanwhile, Demetrius (Victor Mature), Marcellus' slave, is planning to leave and serve a higher master. Meanwhile Charteris's daughter Victoria (Gene Tierney) enters the casino going by the name of Poppy Smith in the hopes of injecting some excitement into her life. Realising Poppy's true identity, Gin enlists the help of Dr Omar (Victor Mature) to encourage Poppy's drinking and gambling, enticing her into addiction. When Gin recognises that Charteris is actually her long-lost husband who abandoned her years ago, she plans to exact revenge at her Chinese New Year party. Charteris, however, has quite a surprise for her.
