This first volume of the "Old French Fairy Tales" by Sophie Rostopchine, Comtesse de Segur (1799-1874) gathers together three stories from a marvelous age when fairies and genii were still thriving in our world and our imagination. Exquisitely illustrated by Virginia Frances Sterrett (1900-1931), "The story of Blondine, Bonne-biche, and Beau-Minon," "Good Little Henry" and "History of Princess Rosette" are bringing back from a distant past some good old moral values and a reassuring creed that honesty, true friendship and love will ultimately prevail. Despite all evil plots meant to lure and to perish her, Blondine learns that obedience, good nurture and, most of all, patience will always be rewarded. Henry discovers that his filial love and diligence can overcome the most impressive obstacles, while Princess Rosetta wins our hearts and that of Prince Charmant solely by her kindness, decency and generosity. Blondine, the Pretty Doe and the Gallant Cat is an English translation of the French "Histoire de Blondine, Bonne-Biche e Beau-Minon," published in 1856 as part of the Countess de Segur's "Nouveaux Contes de fees." This fairy tale, delightful for both adults and children, tells the misfortunes of a blonde princess, Blondine, who, having had a difficult time after her father King Benevolent remarried a wicked queen, finds herself lost in an enchanted forest. The story is sad but has a happy ending, and cleverly illustrates moral lessons that can serve as a lesson to us all.
