R4,193 Discovery Miles 41 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Academic - Scholarly - Defoe Studies - Political History - Eighteenth-Century History; In this new book, Furbank and Owens attempt to disentangle the story of Daniel Defoe's political career, as journalist, polemicist, political theorist and secret agent. They argue that this remarkable career calls for a good deal of rethinking, not least because biography and bibliography are here inextricably intertwined. The book challenges the current account of Defoe's political career - rather drastically in some cases. It argues, for example, that Defoe's cherished story of his intimacy with King William - a staple of all previous Defoe biographies - was most probably an (immensely bold) fiction, a view which, if correct, entails considerable revision of his personality and career. Likewise, it offers a new interpretation of the famous series of letters Defoe wrote in 1718 to his Government paymaster, the Whig Undersecretary of State Charles de la Faye,

Shakespeare, Aphra Behn and the Canon (Paperback): Lizbeth Goodman, W.R. Owens Shakespeare, Aphra Behn and the Canon (Paperback)
Lizbeth Goodman, W.R. Owens
R871 Discovery Miles 8 710 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this text students are introduced to three of Shakespeare's best known plays - "Henry V", "Othello" and "As You Like It" - and a Restoration comedy, Aphra Behn's "The Rover". The aim is to explore the concept of the literary canon and the complex process by which certain authors and works are accorded a high cultural status. Shakespeare personifies the canonical author, while Aphra Behn (the first professional woman writer, whose work was tremendously popular and controversial in the 17th century) has been largely ignored until her recent rediscovery by feminist critics. No previous knowledge of either Shakespeare or Aphra Behn is assumed: both authors are introduced and their works are placed in context. Each chapter offers practical exercises in analyzing key passages of text and criticism, followed by detailed discussion. The text of "The Rover" is included here, fully modernized and with explanatory notes.

Reception, Appropriation, Recollection - Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress (Paperback): W.R. Owens, Stuart Sim Reception, Appropriation, Recollection - Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress (Paperback)
W.R. Owens, Stuart Sim
R1,448 R1,235 Discovery Miles 12 350 Save R213 (15%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The ten essays that make up this volume are drawn from papers delivered at the fourth triennial conference of the International John Bunyan Society. A theme of the conference was the extraordinary reception history of the Pilgrim's Progress: how it has been translated, adapted, illustrated and read within different cultures over the past three centuries. As contributors here demonstrate, Bunyan's book has influenced - in sometimes unexpected ways - writers as diverse as Dickens, George Eliot, Charles Kingsley, Mary Ward, William Hale White, Louis MacNeice and Samuel Beckett. Through the agency of missionary translators it circulated internationally, and in the process was transformed and read in a wide variety of ways by different groups of readers. Romantic critics including Southey, Scott and Macaulay established it as a 'classic' text, but illustrators, editors and publishers also figured importantly in the process of its literary canonisation. Bunyan even made a brief appearance in one of the most famous films of the Second World War, Powell and Pressburger's A Matter of Life and Death. What the volume as a whole reveals is the extraordinary influence of the Pilgrim's Progress and its continuing capacity to inspire the imagination of all kinds of readers.
