Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
This textbook provides the first overview of plant-animal
interactions for twenty years focused on the needs of students and

biodiversity.
Sie kennen vielleicht das Gefühl: Sie lesen eine Aussage zum
Klimawandel und eine Minute später das genaue Gegenteil. Was ist
nun wahr? Wie kann ich als Laie oder Fachfremder mitdiskutieren und
Argumente finden, ohne selbst Fake News zu verbreiten? Man findet

NSTAR 2007. The goal of NSTAR 2007 was to bring together experts on
all areas of physics relevant to baryon spectroscopy, both in
experiment and theory. Latest results were presented in 30 plenary
talks and 34 parallel contributions, the proceedings of which are
collected in this volume. The workshop was attended by 123
scientists of 41 universities and laboratories from 16 countries.
Exciting new high-precision data were shown from facilities in
Asia, the US and Europe, e.g. BES, BNL, COSY, ELSA, GRAAL, JLab,
MAMI and LEPS. Large-acceptance detectors provide complete angular
distributions in many reaction channels. Particular emphasis is put
on the measurement of single and double polarisation observables
such that many new polarization measurements can be expected in
forthcoming meetings.
The editors of Beyond Trauma: Cultural and Societal Dynamics have
created a volume that goes beyond the individual's psychological
dynamics of trauma, exploring its social, cultural, politica , and
ethical dimensions from an international as well as a global
perspective. In the opening address as International Chair of the
First World Conference of the International Society for Traumatic
Stress Studies on Trauma and Tragedy: The Origins, Management, and
Prevention of Traumatic Stress in Today's World, June 22-26, 1992,
Amsterdam, The Netherlands, the conference that formed the
foundation for the col lected chapters in this volume, 1 commented:
This meeting is a landmark in accomplishing the Society's universal
mission. Our distinguished International Scientific Advisory
Committee and Honor ary Committee, whose membership was drawn from
over 60 countries, the cooperation of six United Nations bodies,
and the participation anei endorse ment of numerous nongovernmental
organizations and institutions attest to the Society's emerging
presence as a major international forum for profes sionals of ali
disciplines working with victims and trauma survivors."
The cardiac system represents one of the most exciting challenges
to human ingenuity. Critical to our survival, it consists of a
tantalizing array of interacting phenomena, from ionic microscopic
transport, membrane channels and receptors through cellular
metabolism, energy production to fiber mechanics, microcirculation,
electrical activation to the global, clinically observed, function,
which is measured by pressure, volume, coronary flow, heart rate,
shape changes and responds to imposed loads and pharmaceutical
challenges. It is a complex interdisciplinary system requiring the
joint efforts of the life sciences, the exact sciences, engineering
and technology to understand and control the pathologies involved.
The Henry Goldberg Workshops were set up to address these
challenges. Briefly, our goals are: 1. To foster interdisciplinary
interaction between scientists from different areas of cardiology,
identify missing links, and catalyze new questions. 2. To relate
micro scale cellular phenomena to the global, clinically manifested
cardiac function. 3. To relate conceptual modeling and quantitative
analysis to experimental and clinical data. 4. To encourage
international cooperation so as to disperse medical and
technological know how and lead to better understanding of the
cardiac system. Today we celebrate the 7th birthday of a dream come
true; a dream to bring together the diversified expertise in the
various fields of science, engineering and medicine, to relate to
the numerous interactive parameters and disciplines involved in the
performance of the heart.
The future as a field of inquiry, debate or forecasts continues to
flourish. However, this book differs from existing literature in
several important ways. It is not another publication on future
scenarios guided by a linear technological fix - nor is it simply a
volume of new statistics on economic, demographic or geopolitical
developments. Rather, Future Courses of Human Societies explores
and builds a general framework for the long-term evolution of human
societies. Drawing upon a wide range of insights from across the
social and natural sciences, the authors of this title present
original, exploratory methodological and analytical approaches to
examining the future. Encouraging the reader to deepen their
knowledge and encourage critical thinking, three themes are
considered in their complexity and multi-dimensionality:
technological innovations; future 'progress'; and the critical
aspect of organizing collective life in the future. Furthermore, in
contrast to previous studies which have embraced a relatively short
time-span, this text incorporates perspectives from the immediate
to the distant future, extending to several centuries and even
millennia. An interdisciplinary and internationally comprehensive
volume, Future Courses of Human Societies is a key source for
students and researchers interested in fields such as future
studies, technology in society, interdisciplinary learnings on
social and natural sciences and future economic and political
evolutions.
Placing it within the theoretical perspectives and debates in
Organizational Theory (OT), this book explores the organizational
design and internal functioning of a rather emblematic and widely
acclaimed transnational social organization: the alternative
globalization movement (previously anti-globalization movement).
The issue of power in particular remains the central feature of the
book. Based on a detailed study of two of the movement's essential
constituents (transnational campaigns and the World Social Forum),
the book examines the complexity in which certain forms of internal
relations or mechanisms of power emerge. In other words, how is the
organizational hierarchy conceived and how are important
responsibilities executed? What are the principal modes of
authority and control? What are the priorities and motives of the
leading individuals and groups within the movement? Furthermore,
what makes certain echelons, groups, or individuals wield more
influence and authority than others, and also justify their
legitimacy through diverse means? These questions are especially
valid owing to the movement's proper interpretation of power which
considers the concentration of power as totally unacceptable. The
movement draws lessons from the history of social changes to
suggest that political parties and labour movements tended to give
rise to the seizure of power by a few, a heavy bureaucracy, and the
lack of transparency. Logically, then, a new organizational vision
should emerge, avoiding hierarchies and encouraging a more diffused
process of power sharing. However, an informal manner of
functioning has instead created many ambiguities, with new sets of
interests and power relations gradually becoming manifest within
the movement. All carefully considered, the book draws three
principal conclusions: first, an informal organization structure
does not mean that there is an absence of power; second, the
exercise of power takes place while denying it; and third, there is
seemingly a lack of internal resistanc
On a winter night in 1743, a local magistrate was stabbed to death
in the churchyard of Rye by an angry butcher. Why did this gruesome
crime happen? What does it reveal about the political, economic,
and cultural patterns that existed in this small English port town?
To answer these questions, this fascinating book takes us back to
the mid-sixteenth century, when religious and social tensions began
to fragment the quiet town of Rye and led to witch hunts, riots,
and violent political confrontations. Paul Monod examines events
over the course of the next two centuries, tracing the town's
transition as it moved from narrowly focused Reformation norms to
the more expansive ideas of the emerging commercial society. In the
process, relations among the town's inhabitants were fundamentally
altered. The history of Rye mirrored that of the whole nation, and
it gives us an intriguing new perspective on England in the early
modern period.
This volume includes major theoretical writings on drama from the
Greeks, through the Renaissance up to the late seventeenth century,
compiled and edited for students of drama and theatre. There are
substantial extracts from twenty-eight writers including Plato,
Aristotle, Horace, Scaliger, Castelvetro, Guarini, Sidney, Jonson,
Corneille, Racine, Dryden and Congreve. The compilers have chosen
writers who present detailed arguments about issues that are sill
relevant to our understanding of drama and theatre. Many of the
texts have been freshly translated and all have newly been
annotated and introduced by the compilers, who draw attention to
recurrent themes by a system of cross-references. Michael Sidnell's
useful introduction explores the issues which frequently concern
these writers and practitioners: the nature of imitation, the
relation of dramatic text to live performance, the effect of stage
action on audience emotion and behaviour - issues which still
concern critics and theorists of drama today. Later volumes will
cover the period from Diderot to Victor Hugo, modern dramatic
theory and performance theory.

This book provides a state-of-the-art guide to the rapidly growing
field of traumatic stress. It reviews and integrates the many
scientific findings from psychology, psychiatry and sociology into
an encompassing model. This general model is applicable to the
reactions to war stress, disaster, violence, accidents and
bereavement. Topics such as normal and disturbed coping patterns,
social support and various risk factors are also discussed. In
addition to the theoretical model, a number of treatment methods
for posttraumatic stress disorders is described. Theoretical and
practical issues of these treatments are presented. The efficiency
of the methods is elucidated by the description of a psychotherapy
outcome study on these methods. Information of prevention programs
for victims of serious life events is also provided. This
integrative approach is of interest to researchers, clinicians,
public health workers, physicians, personnel workers, and all other
professionals who are involved in research and/or health care with
regard to traumatic events.
