The Alamo/The Horse Soldiers/Red River (DVD): John Wayne, Richard Widmark, Laurence Harvey, Richard Boone, Frankie Avalon,... The Alamo/The Horse Soldiers/Red River (DVD)
John Wayne, Richard Widmark, Laurence Harvey, Richard Boone, Frankie Avalon, … 2
R158 Discovery Miles 1 580 Ships in 20 - 25 working days

Box-set containing three popular John Wayne westerns. In 'The Alamo' (1960), a group of 187 Americans, led by Colonels William Travis (Laurence Harvey), Davey Crockett (Wayne) and Jim Bowie (Richard Widmark) battle to hold off Santa Anna's army of 7,000. 'The Horse Soldiers' (1959) sees Wayne play hardbitten Union Cavalry Colonel Marlowe, who teams up with a pacifist doctor (William Holden) in this Civil War western directed by John Ford. Together with a feisty Southern belle (Constance Towers), the pair lead a cavalry patrol on a mission 300 miles into Confederate territory, in an attempt to destroy a railroad junction and choke off vital supply lines. Finally, in 'Red River' (1948), Tom Dunson (Wayne) and his adopted son (Montgomery Clift) lead the cattle train which establishes the Chisholm Trail. However, father and son argue when it comes to bringing law and order to the Wild West; Tom is tied to an authoritarian approach, whilst his son favours a more liberal stance, refusing to resort to the law of the gun.

Triple bill featuring the first three 'Omen' films. The saga begins with 'The Omen' (1976), when US Ambassador Robert Thorn (Gregory Peck) is persuaded to substitute a newborn baby, whose mother has died in childbirth, for his own stillborn son. By the age of five, the child, Damien (Harvey Stephens), seems to be exerting a malevolent influence on the Thorn household, suffering a violent fit when he is taken to church and causing his nanny to hang herself. Thorn searches for an answer to his son's behaviour and meets maverick priest Father Brennan (Patrick Troughton), who tries to convince him that Damien is in fact the Antichrist and must be stopped at all costs. The Ambassador at first dismisses this as the crazy rantings of a religious maniac, but subsequent events suggest that maybe the priest had a point. The second film, 'Damien - Omen 2' (1978), picks up events a few years later, with the now-orphaned Damien (Jonathan Scott-Taylor) turning 13 and living with his adoring aunt and uncle. Aunt Marion (Lee Grant) is the first to suspect there is more to the young devil than adolescent angst, leading to her swift dispatch by a killer raven. As for Damien, he is making his mark at military school, and is dismayed to discover his true demonic identity - but not for long. The third film, 'Omen 3 - The Final Conflict' (1981), finds Damien (Sam Neill) all grown up and heading a multinational company. He is about to be appointed US Ambassador to England, a position which will enable him to take over the world and thus fulfil the terrible forecasts of scripture. But there is opposition in the form of a bunch of monks with sacred daggers who will do everything necessary to prevent Satan's enthronement.

Collection of seven classic films. 'The Guns of Navarone' (1961), set in 1943, follows a group of mismatched soldiers who are sent to sabotage two powerful Nazi guns situated on a Greek island. If their mission fails, the guns will wipe out the 2,000 British soldiers who are attempting to evacuate civilians further down the coast. The mission is led by the dispassionate Captain Mallory (Gregory Peck) whose clinical approach does not find favour with explosives expert Corporal Miller (David Niven). Meanwhile, the group's Greek patriot guide Andrea Stavros (Anthony Quinn) is nursing a grudge against Mallory for an old injustice. 'The Bridge On the River Kwai' (1957), based on the novel by Pierre Boulle, sees a group of prisoners of war forced to build a bridge in Burma for the Japanese, with Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness) the appointed leader of the men. When the Japanese commander Colonel Saito (Sessue Hayakawa) orders the construction, Nicholson agrees on the basis that the project will keep his men occupied and give them an opportunity to prove, through the quality of their work, the superiority of British engineering. However, as the bridge progresses and the prisoners strive to show their craftsmanship, Nicholson appears to lose sight of the fact that the ultimate object of the bridge is to help the Japanese win the war. 'Lawrence of Arabia' (1962) is David Lean's Oscar-winning biopic starring Peter O'Toole as T.E. Lawrence, the Oxford-educated British army officer who aided the Arabs in their revolt against the Turks. Teaming up with Sherif Ali (Omar Sharif), Lawrence crosses an inhospitable desert in order to join two separate Arab tribes together as a single fighting force. Aiming to achieve Arab sovereignty, he wins a series of military victories but always keeps his eye on the larger picture, doing his best to prevent the subjection of the Arabs to British colonial rule. Charlton Heston stars in the title role of 'Major Dundee' (1965), an epic Western about a Major who joins forces with his sworn enemy to destroy a band of Apaches. When Major Amos Dundee is sent to a prisoner of war camp after making an error at the Battle of Gettysburg, he uses the opportunity to gather a small, but ruthless, army to lead on a mission of revenge. Burt Lancaster and Lee Marvin star in 'The Professionals' (1966), following four soldiers of fortune who are hired by a wealthy Texan oil baron (Ralph Bellamy) to rescue his kidnapped wife (Claudia Cardinale) who has been taken across the Mexican border by a band of mercenaries. The four men, each regarded as a specialist in his field - expert marksman and tracker Jake (Woody Strode), explosives master Dolworth (Lancaster), horse handler Ehrengard (Robert Ryan) and Fardan (Marvin) whose skills lie in tactics and weaponry - make their way across the treacherous landscape to retrieve the beautiful kidnappee, but along the way discover all is not what it seems. 'Gandhi' (1982), Richard Attenborough's Academy Award-winning epic, follows the extraordinary life of Mahatma Gandhi (Ben Kingsley) from his beginnings as a young Indian lawyer to his triumph as a revolutionary. After being thrown off a South African train just for being Indian, Gandhi realised just how prejudiced people were about his race and decided to do something about it. Taking the matter into his own hands, Gandhi arranges non-violent protests in the hope of getting the attention of the South African government. Finally, Fred Zinnemann's classic drama 'From Here to Eternity' (1953) follows the events of the night before the fateful attack on Pearl Harbor. Private Prewitt (Montgomery Clift) is a new recruit at the military base, and has already fallen foul of his superiors due to his refusal to box on the company team. Given the worst duties as a result, Prewitt is befriended by Angelo Maggio (Frank Sinatra), a young soldier who is himself persecuted by the Italian-hating Sergeant Fatso (Ernest Borgnine). Meanwhile, Sergeant Warden (Lancaster), Prewitt's superior, treads on dangerous ground when he allows himself to get caught up in an affair with an officer's wife (Deborah Kerr).

Climate change-related effects and aftermaths of natural disasters, such as Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, have wreaked havoc on local peoples' lives and livelihoods, especially in impoverished coastal communities. This book looks at local-level responses to the effects of climate change from the perspective of ecological theology and feminism, which provides a solution-based and gender-equitable approach to some of the problems of climate change. It examines how local social and religious action workers are partnering with local communities to transform and reconstruct their lives and livelihoods in the 21st century.

In her Hollywood debut 'Roman Holiday' (1953), Hepburn won an Academy Award as Princess Anne, the bored royal who absconds from her duties and meets up with Gregory Peck's American ex-pat journalist. Billy Wilder directs her in 'Sabrina Fair' (1954) as the shy daughter of a wealthy family's chauffeur, who returns from two years in Paris as a sophisticated young woman. The musical romantic comedy 'Funny Face' (1957) sees Hepburn playing alongside Fred Astaire to the music of Gershwin as a young bookshop clerk transformed into an international fashion model. Adapted from the Truman Capote novella, 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' (1961) sees Hepburn in her archetypal role as dizzy call-girl Holly Golightly, trying not to fall for George Peppard's failed writer in New York. In 'Paris When it Sizzles' (1964), Hepburn plays a secretary hired to help alcoholic writer Richard Benson (William Holden) finish up a screenplay for a Hollywood producer, with only two days until the end of his deadline.
