The Dark Province - Son of Duprin (Hardcover): H. Johnson William H. Johnson The Dark Province - Son of Duprin (Hardcover)
H. Johnson William H. Johnson
R464 Discovery Miles 4 640 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sitting in the honored stalls of the Crystal Sanctuary, Calvin Gooding should be rejoicing in the message he receives from the Holy King of Duprin. But his heart is heavy. He awaits the carriage in which he must ride to deliver the fated news to his family. Time has run out. In the midst of this sorrow, exhaustion, and uncertainty, a sorceress from the Dark Province appears to Calvin. She promises to make his terminally ill twin sister, Marilyn, well again. As twins, Calvin and Mari share a special bond, and Calvin will do almost anything to save his sister's life. But in order to free Mari from death's grip, the sorceress claims that Calvin must travel to the Dark Province-a land where souls and flesh are devoured by the lawless and the spirit of man is bound in shackles. It's a reckless land dominated by morally corrupt warlords and open sexuality. Wrapped tightly in his religion, Calvin must make a life-altering decision. He can choose to follow the sorceress into the sinful abyss to save his sister, or he can accept a life of guilt and certain torment over Mari's death.

As a star linebacker for the Cleveland Browns in the 1940s and 1950s, Marion Motley invented the modern concept of the fullback. In 1946, he and three other players broke professional football's color barrier, helping set the stage for Jackie Robinson's desegregation of Major League baseball in 1947. Retiring with five championships and the universal respect of his peers, Motley returned to ordinary life as a black man in pre-Civil Rights Act America. Because his career pre-dated nationally televised football, Motley's name is largely unknown today, when a figure of his stature would enjoy celebrity as a coach or owner. This first ever biography tells the story of the football player Sports Illustrated's Paul "Dr. Z" Zimmerman described as the greatest ever to take the field.

Hal Trosky played first base for the Cleveland Indians during the Great Depression, a time when the American League included perhaps the greatest trio of first basemen ever: Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, and Hank Greenberg. Because of the phenomenal feats of those players, Trosky's story was consigned to the figurative back page of history. He led the American League in Runs Batted In in 1936, was elected to the Indians' All-Time team in 1969, and at his peak played at a level comparable to anyone in the game. His career was tragically cut short due to an onset of severe migraine headaches, and he was out of baseball by the age of 34, but his playing days spanned the time from Babe Ruth through the end of World War II. Until now, his story has never been entirely told. This book combines access to Trosky family archives with exhaustive research in order to craft a narrative of Trosky's life. From his early years in Iowa, through his entire major league career and throughout his life after baseball, this book looks at the man on and off the diamond, and on the legacy that remains.

This book demonstrates how the processes of innovation that are occurring in business and the sciences in China are transforming it into a twenty-first century nation. In essence, a country with a long tradition of innovation has resurrected the concept in an effort to modernize: China has become a modern nation to the extent that it has relied on innovation to facilitate that process and in doing so it has reached a leadership position in the global economy. This book is of special value to anyone interested in doing business in China especially those people who wish to learn the history of Chinese innovation practices or who seek to be educated in devising creative solutions for business.
