Vipassand-bhavand, "the development of insight," embodies the essence of the teaching of the Buddha. As taught by S. N. Goenka, this path to self-awareness is extraordinary in its simplicity, its lack of dogma and, above all, its results. The Vipassana technique can be successfully applied by anyone.
Based on the lectures and writings of S. N. Goenka--and prepared under his direct guidance--The Art of Living shows how this technique can be used to solve problems, develop unused potential, and lead a peaceful, productive life. It includes stories by S. N. Goenka, as well as answers to students' questions, that convey a vivid sense of his teaching.
S. N. Goenka's Vipassana courses have attracted thousands of people of every background. Unique among teachers of meditation, Goenka is a retired industrialist and former leader of the Indian Community in Burma. Although a layman, his teaching has won the approval of senior Buddhist monks in Burma, India, and Sri Lanka, a number of whom have taken courses under his guidance. Despite his magnetism, he has no wish to be a "guru" --instead he teaches self-responsibility. This is the first systematic study of his teachings to appear in English.
Iconography is undergoing a revival in twenty-first-century
American Catholicism. William Hart McNichols, who paints in his
studio in New Mexico, is one of the most popular iconographers of
this renaissance, and this book comprises a selection of his icons
and sacred images. The book presents images of holy women and holy
men as well as images of Mary and Jesus. Philosopher and theologian
John D. Dadosky introduces each piece and demonstrates how
McNichols’s paintings communicate sacred stories as well as mark
significant moments in the artist’s personal development.

on the Western prairie a fear-crazed, unbroken colt lunging along a
dimly marked trail a ten-year-old boy, his only garment a nightgown
riding bareback, one hand tangled in the mane of a flying animal y
the other clutching the rope of a hacka more a frightened boy
dragged from sleep and sent on a wild mid night ride seeking help
to prevent a murder. A black night pierced dimly and intermittently
through a misty fog by street gas-lamps a heavily loaded ice-wagon
its scale irons clanking dismally against its sides, lumbering over
rough cobbled pavements a man and a dozing boy of fourteen the
first and second hands on the drivers seat. The man jerks his lines
and clucks to his team. An hour s journey brings dawn and the man
will be at the back of the wagon weighing ice and the boy climbing
New York tenement stairways, with ice upon his back. I WAS bom at
Newburgh, New York. My first recollec tion is of Oswego, Illinois,
My father was a miller, and we lived near the flour mill on the Fox
Riven There were only two houses. It was springtime. The ice had
broken up and was cumbrously and slowly grinding its way
down-river. The out-of-banks torrent was still raging, however, and
here and there a large slab of ice would be picked up by the very
force of the current and dashed hurtling through the air, 3

The digital humanities is a rapidly growing field that is
transforming humanities research through digital tools and
resources. Researchers can now quickly trace every one of Issac
Newton's annotations, use social media to engage academic and
public audiences in the interpretation of cultural texts, and
visualize travel via ox cart in third-century Rome or camel caravan
in ancient Egypt. Rhetorical scholars are leading the revolution by
fully utilizing the digital toolbox, finding themselves at the
nexus of digital innovation.
"Rhetoric and the Digital Humanities "is a timely,
multidisciplinary collection that is the first to bridge
scholarship in rhetorical studies and the digital humanities. It
offers much-needed guidance on how the theories and methodologies
of rhetorical studies can enhance all work in digital humanities,
and vice versa. Twenty-three essays over three sections delve into
connections, research methodology, and future directions in this
field. Jim Ridolfo and William Hart-Davidson have assembled a broad
group of more than thirty accomplished scholars. Read together,
these essays represent the cutting edge of research, offering
guidance that will energize and inspire future collaborations.
Curator's Statement Light in All Darkness: Images and Icons by
William Hart McNichols is an exhibition brimming with inspiring
icons, figures and people from diverse backgrounds. You will see
icons of Kateri Tekakwitha "The Lily of the Mohawks," St. Rose of
Lima, Patroness of the Americas, and even Princess Diana. The real
"light in all darkness" of this exhibition is Father Bill himself.
It has been an honor to work with him on the exhibition and
catalog, sometimes daily, making a careful selection of the images
and icons you will see in this exhibit. We were very thoughtful in
selecting the images to bring hope and light to those in a time of
darkness. The timeliness of this exhibit has made it even more
impactful. Shanna Shelby, program administrator, McNichols Civic
