February 2005 marked the ephemeral installation of a monumental work of art by Christo and Jeanne-Claude in New York City's Central Park. First conceived in 1979 and rejected by New York City government in 1981, the project was approved by Mayor Michael Bloomberg's administration in 2003. The work of art consisted of 7503 16-foot-high vinyl gates with saffron-colored fabric panels on twenty-three miles of the Park's walkways. Seen from the buildings surrounding the Park, The Gates looked like a saffron flowing river, while those walking through them experienced the ambience of a fluid golden ceiling. Financed entirely by Christo and Jeanne-Claude through their C.V.J. Corporation, The Gates were assembled and installed by thousands of paid workers. Completed on February 12, 2005, The Gates remained in place for sixteen days, after which they were removed and the materials recycled. The work of art was free for all visitors, who continued to use Central Park during the whole process. This historic event provided a memorable and joyous experience for New Yorkers and visitors. This special collector's volume documents the entire project from conception to realization. Designed by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, with texts by Jonathan Henery and photographs by exclusive photographer Wolfgang Volz, this limited-edition volume is the ultimate book object for fans and collectors who want a lasting and unique souvenir of this remarkable work of art. This Collector's Edition is limited to 5,000 copies, signed and numbered by Christo and Jeanne-Claude and Wolfgang Volz. Each copy comes with a 24 X 24 cm (9.4 X 9.4 in.) piece of the fabric used for the work of art. It contains 104 preparatory drawings and collages, as well as 900 important documents, engineering drawings, technical data, maps, and 1,441 photographs from 1979 to 2005. This is the third volume in our Christo and Jeanne-Claude collector's series, complementing Wrapped Reichstag, Berlin, and The Umbrellas, Japan - USA.
From June 18 to July 3, 2016, 100 kilometers east of Milan and 200 kilometers west of Venice, thousands of people will walk on water. The Floating Piers by Christo and Jeanne-Claude deploys 70,000 square meters of shimmering yellow fabric above a modular floating dock system of 220,000 high-density polyethylene cubes to create a temporary three-kilometer walkway across the surface of Lake Iseo, connecting the mainland to the islands of Monte Isola and San Paolo. The piers are 16 meters wide and approximately 40 centimeters high, with sloping sides. Visitors experience the artwork by walking from Sulzano to Monte Isola and over to San Paolo. The mountains surrounding the lake also offer a bird's-eye view of the project, revealing unnoticed angles and perspectives. The Floating Piers is Christo and Jeanne-Claude's first large-scale project since they realized The Gates in 2005 and draws upon their established history of projects in Italy, including Wrapped Fountain and Wrapped Medieval Tower in Spoleto, 1968; Wrapped Monuments in Milan, 1970; and The Wall - Wrapped Roman Wall in Rome, 1973-74. As with all of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's projects, The Floating Piers is funded entirely through the sale of Christo's original works of art. After the 16-day exhibition, all components will be removed and recycled. This book presents rich photographic coverage of The Floating Piers alongside sketches, models, documents and designs, revealing the process behind this waterborne work of art. Incorporating everything from approval procedures to the manufacture of fabric and anchoring elements, it testifies not only to Christo and Jeanne-Claude's unique creative imagination but also to the immense technical, bureaucratic, and logistical feats that allowed the concept to take float.
This book compiles documentation for two unrealized projects by the legendary duo of Christo (born 1935) and Jeanne-Claude (1935-2009): "The Mastaba," a project conceived in 1977 for the United Arabic Emirates, and "Over the River," a project recently conceived for the Arkansas River. "Mastaba," Arabic for "bench," is proposed as a sculpture of approximately 410,000 horizontally stacked and variously colored oil barrels. Trees and shrubbery would be planted around the Mastaba as a windbreak against the sand and windstorms; the area adjacent to the walkways approaching the Mastaba would resemble an oasis with flowers and grass. "Over the River" consists of a succession of fabric panels to be suspended above the Arkansas River, for a period of two weeks sometime between mid-July and mid-August of any given year in the future (2013 at the earliest). Both projects are fully illustrated with preparatory drawings and photographs of the proposed locations.
Christo and Jeanne-Claude are renowned for their dramatic and
innovative public projects. Their installations often feature
fabric--sometimes wrapped around existing structures or used to
create large-scale temporary environments. Some of their most
influential projects include "Running Fence "in" "Sonoma and Marin
Counties, California, "Surrounded Islands "in" "Miami, the "Pont
Neuf Wrapped "in Paris," "the "Wrapped Reichstag "in" "Berlin, and
"The Umbrellas "simultaneously" "in Japan and California. Now New
York City, where they have lived and worked for forty years, will
be the site for a much-anticipated Christo and Jeanne-Claude
project. "The Gates "will" "consist of saffron-colored fabric
panels suspended from the horizontal tops of over 7,500
sixteen-foot-tall vinyl gates, positioned at regular intervals
throughout 23 miles of walkways of Central Park. The installation
will be on view for sixteen days, beginning February 12, 2005
The work of the artist couple Christo (born 1935) and Jeanne-Claude (1935-2009) resists categorization. It is a hybrid of art, urban planning, architecture, and engineering, but above all an aesthetic uniquely their own: surreal and ethereal environmental interventions that have graced monuments, public parks, and centers of power alike. This compact book spans the complete career of the couple who were born on the very same day, met in Paris, fell in love, and became a creative team like no other. With rich illustration, it spans Christo and Jeanne-Claude's earliest projects in the 1950s right through to The Floating Piers, installed at Lake Iseo, Italy, in 2016. The book celebrates all of the couple's most famous environmental interventions, such as The Gates in New York's Central Park and the Wrapped Reichstag in Berlin, while also featuring early drawings and family photos unknown to the wider public.
