What are active materials? This book aims to introduce and redefine conceptions of matter by considering materials as entities that 'sense' and respond to their environment. By examining the modeling of, the experiments on, and the construction of these materials, and by developing a theory of their structure, their collective activity, and their functionality, this volume identifies and develops a novel scientific approach to active materials. Moreover, essays on the history and philosophy of metallurgy, chemistry, biology, and materials science provide these various approaches to active materials with a historical and cultural context. The interviews with experts from the natural sciences included in this volume develop new understandings of 'active matter' and active materials in relation to a range of research objects and from the perspective of different scientific disciplines, including biology, physics, chemistry, and materials science. These insights are complemented by contributions on the activity of matter and materials from the humanities and the design field. Das vorliegende Buch unternimmt weder eine transhistorische Rekonstruktion semiotischer Theoreme noch den Versuch ihrer Aktualisierung. Vielmehr will es den paradigmatischen Status von Lessings "Laokoon" fur eine Diskursgeschichte des Zeichens im 18. Jahrhundert herausarbeiten. Obgleich Lessing selbst es dezidiert ablehnt, von nicht-kunstlerischen Zeichenpraktiken zu handeln, sind seine Reflexionen nicht auf das Gebiet der Kunste zu beschranken. Intuition, Illusion, Evidenz oder das "bequeme Verhaltnis" von Bezeichnendem und Bezeichnetem sind vielmehr Effekte, die auch von Wissenschaften und sozialen Praktiken angestrebt werden. Da es im "Laokoon" nicht nur um die semiotischen Qualitaten und Okonomien von Bild und Text, um das Nebeneinander und Nacheinander der Zeichen geht, sondern auch um die Geschwindigkeit, Steuerung und Optimierung von Zeichenprozessen, hat Lessings Text Indiziencharakter fur fundamentale Problemstellungen, die etwa auch in den Bereichen von Regierungskunsten und Logik nach Losungen verlangen. It is only recently, with the increasing interest in origami and folding in natural sciences and the humanities, that the fold as a new conception in a whole range of disciplines has begun to be conceived in a broader way. Folding as a material and structural process offers a new methodology to think about the close relationship of matter, form and code. It henceforth crosses out old dichotomies, such as the organic and the inorganic or nature and technology, and blurs the boundaries between experimental, conceptual and historical approaches. This anthology aims to unfold this new interdisciplinary field and its disciplinary impact, ranging from materials science, biology, architecture, and mathematics to literature and philosophy.
