R2,994 R2,137 Discovery Miles 21 370 Save R857 (29%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides a framework for computational researchers studying the basics of cancer through comparative analyses of omic data. It discusses how key cancer pathways can be analyzed and discovered to derive new insights into the disease and identifies diagnostic and prognostic markers for cancer. Chapters explain the basic cancer biology and how cancer develops, including the many potential survival routes. The examination of gene-expression patterns uncovers commonalities across multiple cancers and specific characteristics of individual cancer types. The authors also treat cancer as an evolving complex system, explore future case studies, and summarize the essential online data sources. Cancer Bioinformatics is designed for practitioners and researchers working in cancer research and bioinformatics. It is also suitable as a secondary textbook for advanced-level students studying computer science, biostatistics or biomedicine.

PDEs are a family of enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of intracellular cyclic nucleotides. They are implicated in a number of disorders and dysfunctions and PDE inhibitors have already proven to be effective therapies for erectile dysfunction, COPD, and psoriatic arthritis. This family of enzymes also plays a role in diseases and disorders of the CNS such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer's Disease. Unfortunately no effective PDE inhibitors have been developed for the treatment of these diseases. The proposed book will be a comprehensive overview of the current state of basic and translational research on PDE inhibitors written by internationally recognized experts. Authors will also discuss potential PDE subtypes and splice variants in the hopes that this will spur more creative approaches to PDE targeting drugs.

Rebalancing Economies in Financially Integrating East Asia (Paperback): Jenny Corbett, Ying Xu Rebalancing Economies in Financially Integrating East Asia (Paperback)
Jenny Corbett, Ying Xu
R1,308 Discovery Miles 13 080 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since the Asian Financial Crisis (AFC) of 1997-98 large current account surpluses have accumulated in the countries of Asia and the Pacific with corresponding deficits elsewhere. The sharp plunge in global trade volumes during the global financial crisis has highlighted the need for 'rebalancing'-focussing more on domestic sources of economic growth than on exports in some Asian economies. One key objective of the book is to elucidate the economic structures and policies that give rise to current account surpluses and imbalances and consider what policy adjustments could change them. Another objective is to show the link between financial systems, financial integration and the transmission of economic shocks between countries. The book offers new dimensions to understand 'rebalancing' and provides alternative and arguably more fundamental solutions to address imbalances. Rather than focusing on exchange rate misalignment, this book begins from the premise that the imbalances are a macroeconomic problem that reflects a mismatch between savings and investment in the surplus countries. Then, it examines exchange rate policies adopted by countries in the region and finds that part of the explanation for their currency strategy lies in their perceived need to build foreign exchange reserves to provide a buffer in case of instabilities. The book examines whether there are other possibilities for countries to insure against economic volatility by more actively and openly engaging with international capital markets. The studies show that closer financial integration, involving more open financial markets, with well-chosen partners, would be welfare-improving and should reduce the need for the counter-productive, self-insurance policies that result in foreign exchange accumulation.

Measuring and Modeling the Web (Paperback): Ying Xu Measuring and Modeling the Web (Paperback)
Ying Xu
R1,463 Discovery Miles 14 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The last couple of decades have witnessed a phenomenal growth in the World Wide Web. The Web has become a ubiquitous channel for information sharing and dissemination. This has created a whole new set of research challenges. This book describes several research contributions in an endeavor towards a better understanding of the Web. In the first part of this book, we address the problem of estimating the sizes of the Web and search engine indexes. This problem has drawn keen interests from both academic and search engine industry in recent years. We present both empirical methods and theoretical results to this problem. After measuring the size of the Web, we are further interested in understanding its structure. In the second half of the book, we use a powerful theoretical tool called webgraph model to study the Web. The topics span from theoretical analysis of graph properties to analyzing privacy in social networks.
