As the youngest designer to earn the fashion industry’s highest
tribute, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Perry Ellis
Award for New Fashion Talent, in 1987, Marc Jacobs has never looked
back. Born in New York in 1963, Jacobs entered Parson’s School of
Design in 1981, and by his graduation year in 1984, he had won some of
the school’s highest honours. While still a student at Parson’s, Jacobs
designed and sold his first collection of hand-knitted sweaters, and
upon graduation, he started with Ruben Thomas Inc. on the Sketchbook
collection in 1985. In 1986, backed by Kashiyama USA Inc., Jacobs
designed the first collection bearing his name, Marc Jacobs. Joining
Perry Ellis in 1989, Jacobs further honed his craft, and another award
was bestowed on him in 1992, the CFDA’s Women’s Designer of the Year
award. Jacobs left in 1993 and began to design under the Marc Jacobs
International Company line. He joined Louis Vuitton as creative
director in 1997 and launched his first collection the same year. A
secondary line, Marc by Marc Jacobs, was offered beginning in 2001.
Clothing was not to be Marc Jacobs’ only claim to fame, however. Marc
Jacobs ventured into fragrances with Coty Inc. and introduced the
women’s perfume Marc Jacobs in 2001 and the men’s cologne Marc Jacobs
Men in 2002. As he developed the Marc Jacobs fragrance lines, he began
to offer large unisex splash bottles for some scents; however, these
would not be what propelled his fragrances to popularity. It was his
specialty fragrances like the popular perfume Daisy and the playfully
alluring Lola that brought him to the forefront. In addition to the
Marc Jacob perfume lines for women, he also designed colognes such as
the Bang and Bang Bang colognes for men, which are a popular choice for
chic and trendy men.
