Perspectives on Integrated Coastal Zone Management (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1999): Wim Salomons,... Perspectives on Integrated Coastal Zone Management (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1999)
Wim Salomons, Kerry Turner, Luiz D. De Lacerda, S. Ramachandran
R5,609 Discovery Miles 56 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

All coastal areas are facing a growing range of stresses and shocks, the scale of which now poses threats to the resilience of both human and environmental coastal systems. Responsible agencies are seeking better ways of managing the causes and consequences of the environmental change process in coastal zones. This volume discusses the basic principles underpinning a more integrated approach to coastal management and highlights the obstacles that may be met in practice in both developed and developing countries. Successful strategies will have to encompass all the elements of management, from planning and design through financing and implementation, as highlighted in this book.

Geological Approaches to Coral Reef Ecology (Paperback, 2007): Richard B. Aronson Geological Approaches to Coral Reef Ecology (Paperback, 2007)
Richard B. Aronson
R5,628 Discovery Miles 56 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a unique perspective on the destruction - both natural and human-caused - of coral reef ecosystems. Reconstructing the ecological history of coral reefs, the authors evaluate whether recent dramatic changes are novel events or part of a long-term trend or cycle. The text combines principles of geophysics, paleontology, and marine sciences with real-time observation, examining the interacting causes of change: hurricane damage, predators, disease, rising sea-level, nutrient loading, global warming and ocean acidification. Predictions about the future of coral reefs inspire strategies for restoration and management of ecosystems. Useful for students and professionals in ecology and marine biology, including environmental managers.

Land Use, Nature Conservation and the Stability of Rainforest Margins in Southeast Asia (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the... Land Use, Nature Conservation and the Stability of Rainforest Margins in Southeast Asia (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2004)
Gerhard Gerold, Michael Fremerey, Edi Guhardja
R5,675 Discovery Miles 56 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Southeast Asia constitutes one of the world's most extended rainforest regions. It is characterized by a high degree of biodiversity and contains a large variety of endemic species. Moreover, these forests provide a number of important and sin gular ecosystem services, like erosion protection and provision of high quality wa ter, which cannot be replaced by alternative ecosystems. However, various forms of encroachment, mostly those made by human interventions, seriously threaten the continuance of rainforests in this area. There is ample evidence that the rainforest resources, apart from large scale commercial logging, are exposed to danger particularly from its margin areas. These areas, which are characterized by intensive man-nature interaction, have been identified as extremely fragile systems. The dynamic equilibrium that bal ances human needs and interventions on the one hand, and natural regeneration capacity on the other, is at stake. The decrease of rainforest resources is, to a sub stantial degree, connected with the destabilization of these systems. Accordingly, the search for measures and processes, which prevent destabilization and promote stability is regarded as imperative. This refers to both the human and the natural part of the forest margin ecosystem."

Light Scattering Media Optics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 3rd ed. 2004): Alexander A. Kokhanovsky Light Scattering Media Optics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 3rd ed. 2004)
Alexander A. Kokhanovsky
R4,358 Discovery Miles 43 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The theory of the scattering of light by small particles is very important in a wide range of applications in atmospheric physics and atmospheric optics, ocean optics, remote sensing, astronomy and astrophysics and biological optics. This book summarises current knowledge of the optical properties of single small particles and natural light scattering media such as snow, clouds, foam aerosols etc. The book considers both single and multiple light scattering regimes, together with light scattering and radiative transfer in close-packed media. The third edition incorporates new findings in the area of light scattering media optics in an updated version of the text.

Natural Fullerenes and Related Structures of Elemental Carbon (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2006): Frans... Natural Fullerenes and Related Structures of Elemental Carbon (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2006)
Frans J. M. Rietmeijer
R4,360 Discovery Miles 43 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Observational, experimental and analytical data show that C60, larger fullerenes, and related structures of elemental carbon exist in interstellar space, meteorites, and on Earth and are associated with meteorite in impact events and in carbon-rich environments such as coals (shungite) and bitumen. The existence of natural fullerenes is at best contested and incompletely documented; realistically it is still controversial. Their presence in astronomical environments can be experimentally constrained but observationally they remain elusive. Fullerenes formation in planetary environments is poorly understood. They survived for giga-years when the environmental conditions were exactly right but even then only a fraction of their original abundance survived. Natural fullerenes and related carbon structures are found in interstellar space, in carbonaceous meteorites associated with giant meteorite impacts (including at the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary) as well as in soot, coal and natural bitumen.
This book provides an up-to-date summary of the state of knowledge on natural fullerenes occurrences and the laboratory techniques used to determine their presence at low concentration in rock samples. It demonstrates that natural fullerenes exist and should be searched for in places not yet considered such as carbon-containing deep-seated crustal rocks.
"Natural Fullerenes and Related Structures of Elemental Carbon" is written for professional astronomers, meteoriticists, earth and planetary scientists, biologists and chemists interested in carbon and hydrocarbon vapor condensation. It is an invaluable resource for practicing research scientists and science teachers in Earth and Planetary Science, Astronomy and Carbon Science.

The Salton Sea Centennial Symposium - Proceedings of a Symposium Celebrating a Century of Symbiosis Among Agriculture, Wildlife... The Salton Sea Centennial Symposium - Proceedings of a Symposium Celebrating a Century of Symbiosis Among Agriculture, Wildlife and People, 1905-2005, held in San Diego, California, USA, March 2005 (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008)
Stuart H. Hurlbert
R5,589 Discovery Miles 55 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume deals with many aspects of the physical and chemical limnology of the Salton Sea, California's largest lake and a lake that may soon to be the object of a multi-billion dollar restoration project. Formed in 1905 by an accidental breaching of outtake structures on the Colorado River, and maintained since then by large and steady inflows of agricultural wastewaters, it has long served as an important habitat for fish and waterbirds and as a major recreational area for people. Highlly eutrophic and with a salinity that is steadily rising and now nearly 50 g/L, it is a lake in great trouble. Most fish species have disappeared, and large fish and bird dieoffs have been common in recent decades. Many of the papers in this volume represent studies undertaken with the aim of informing the re-engineering of this ecosystem so that its value to wildlife and man can be restored or enhanced.

Boreal Peatland Ecosystems (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2006): R.K. Wieder, D.H. Vitt Boreal Peatland Ecosystems (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2006)
R.K. Wieder, D.H. Vitt
R8,330 Discovery Miles 83 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the first truly ecosystem-oriented book on peatlands. It adopts an ecosystems approach to understanding the world's boreal peatlands. The focus is on biogeochemical patterns and processes, production, decomposition, and peat accumulation, and it provides additional information on animal and fungal diversity. A recurring theme is the legacy of boreal peatlands as impressive accumulators of carbon as peat over millennia.

New Trends in Soil Micromorphology (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008): Selim Kapur, Georges Stoops New Trends in Soil Micromorphology (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008)
Selim Kapur, Georges Stoops
R2,873 Discovery Miles 28 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The soil water retention curve, the saturated hydraulic conductivity and the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity function are basic soil hydraulic functions and parameters. Ample apprehension of the soil hydraulic functions and parameters is required for a successful formulation of the principles leading to sustainable soil management, agricultural production and environmental protection. From these, all the other parameters, required in the solution of the practical tasks, are derived. The basic soil hydraulic functions are strongly dependent upon the soil porous system. The development of models is characteristic by the gradual transition from the simplest concepts up to the sophisticated approaches, which should correspond to the visual reality studied by soil micromorphology. 2 Soil Porous System and Soil Micromorphometry 2.1 An Overview on the Quantification of the Soil Porous System Quanti? cation of the soil porous system consists of classi? cation of soil pores, ch- acterization of the soil pores shapes and the estimation of the pore size distribution function. When the hydraulic functions of the soil pores are considered, the following laws of hydrostatics and hydrodynamics are applied as best ? tting to the classi? cation criteria of the size of the pores (Kutilek and Nielsen 1994, p. 20, Kutilek 2004): A. Submicroscopic pores that are so small that they preclude clusters of water molecules from forming ? uid particles or continuous water ? ow paths.

Michael Scherer-Lorenzen, Christian Koerner, Ernst- Detlef Schulze
R8,319 Discovery Miles 83 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

One of the central research themes in ecology is evaluating the extent to which biological richness is necessary to sustain the Earth's system and the functioning of individual ecosystems. In this volume, for the first time, the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem processes in forests is thoroughly explored. The text examines the multiple effects of tree diversity on productivity and growth, biogeochemical cycles, animals, pests, and disturbances. Further, the importance of diversity at different scales, ranging from stand management to global issues, is considered. The authors provide both extensive reviews of the existing literature and own datasets. The volume is ideally suited for researchers and practitioners involved in ecosystem management and the sustainable use of forest resources.

The book is intended as a comprehensive review of current research.

A Practical Guide to Ecological Modelling - Using R as a Simulation Platform (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed.... A Practical Guide to Ecological Modelling - Using R as a Simulation Platform (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2009)
Karline Soetaert, Peter M. J. Herman
R1,917 Discovery Miles 19 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Mathematical modelling is an essential tool in present-day ecological research. Yet for many ecologists it is still problematic to apply modelling in their research. In our experience, the major problem is at the conceptual level: proper understanding of what a model is, how ecological relations can be translated consistently into mathematical equations, how models are solved, steady states calculated and interpreted. Many textbooks jump over these conceptual hurdles to dive into detailed formulations or the mathematics of solution. This book attempts to fill that gap. It introduces essential concepts for mathematical modelling, explains the mathematics behind the methods, and helps readers to implement models and obtain hands-on experience. Throughout the book, emphasis is laid on how to translate ecological questions into interpretable models in a practical way.

The book aims to be an introductory textbook at the undergraduate-graduate level, but will also be useful to seduce experienced ecologists into the world of modelling. The range of ecological models treated is wide, from Lotka-Volterra type of principle-seeking models to environmental or ecosystem models, and including matrix models, lattice models and sequential decision models. All chapters contain a concise introduction into the theory, worked-out examples and exercises. All examples are implemented in the open-source package R, thus taking away problems of software availability for use of the book. All code used in the book is available on a dedicated website.

Biogeography - An Integrative Approach of The Evolution of Living (Hardcover): E Guilbert Biogeography - An Integrative Approach of The Evolution of Living (Hardcover)
E Guilbert
R3,975 Discovery Miles 39 750 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The recent progress in analytical methods, aided by bringing in a wide range of other disciplines, opens up the study to a broader field, which means that biogeography now goes far beyond a simple description of the distribution of living species on Earth. Originating with Alexander von Humboldt, biogeography is a discipline in which ecologists and evolutionists aim to understand the way that living species are organized in connection with their environments. Today, as we face major challenges such as global warming, massive species extinction and devastating pandemics, biogeography offers hypotheses and explanations that may help to provide solutions. This book presents as wide an overview as possible of the different fields that biogeography interacts with. Sixteen authors from all over the world offer different approaches based on their specific areas of knowledge and experience; thus, we intend to illustrate the vast number of diverse aspects covered by biogeography.
