The vehicle (oil modified alkyd resin) allows the colour to dry quicker whilst retaining the other characteristics of conventional oil colour.Because alkyd resin has physical properties that differ slightly from those of traditional oils, the pigment load is somewhat different as well. Experienced painters will notice slightly greater transparency compared to Artists' Oil Colour. The colour has been formulated to offer the greatest degree of tinting strength possible (consistent with good handling properties), and to take full advantage of the true characteristics of each pigment.

Sometimes known as Barium Yellow, this is Barium Chromate, introduced into painting after the Lead Chromates, circa 1820. Unlike them, it has proved to be permanent and non-reactive. By itself a sick looking, acidy yellow with weirdly green overtones, its low tint power facilitates mixes with Magenta and the cooler reds, producing beautifully modulated greys sought in certain passages of flesh painting.

PB29, Average Drying, Semi Transparant, Low Oil Content, Average Tint Power, Non-Toxic There are a few special pigment colours in the range; an example is a genuine Afghan lapis lazuli. The first and most noticeable thing about the lapis lazuli compared to the modern synthetic equivalent ultramarine blue, is the considerably less tinting and covering power and its slightly dirtier colour, though neither of these traits should be seen to detract from the natural beauty.

A version of Burnt Umber which has heavier and more greenish undertones than the Red variant. This is the colour in its presentation of the last two centuries, invaluable for underpainting and showing a range of sandy pinks in hues.
