Robotics is one of the hottest topics in medicine today, with an international interest that is exponentially growing. The introduction of robotic technology into modern operating theatres has provoked a revolutionary change in the basic surgical approach, with many advantages over traditional open surgical treatment, including faster recovery and a significantly lower risk of surgical trauma. While the benefits of minimally invasive surgery are apparent, the expansion of laparoscopic surgery throughout the field has been relatively slow due to the steep learning curve and the level of practice and specialism required to perform such procedures. Although revolutionary upon conception, standard laparoscopy involves the surgeon working from monitors with no depth perception and also with a surgical motion that is counter-intuitive. The introduction of robotic technology however, has surpassed the traditional laparoscopic approach by providing full three dimensional vision, intuitive motion and wristed instrumentation with motion scaling. These dramatic innovations have broadened the scope of surgeons that can now perform complex laparoscopy, and while still in its infancy, robotic assisted surgery has begun to infiltrate all fields of surgery. However, while the practical adoption of the techniques and procedures has increased over the last 5 years, the educational resources have not, leaving the only available learning tools as videos, case observation and proctorships. There is therefore a severe market void for such a publication as this, with steadily growing sales around the world of robotic surgical systems. A compact book, overseen by such a respected figure and featuring contributions from the field leaders, is sure to be very successful within the next few years.
This book provides a practical, step-by-step guidance on modern workhorse flaps for plastic and reconstructive surgeons in training or in their early career. The 50 chapters cover everything from surgical fundamentals to preconditions of microsurgical techniques, but also covers pre-operative planning, steps of microsurgical dissection and management of complications in a straightforward, explanatory style, and are supplemented by over 600 clinical illustrations and cadaveric images. Further videos demonstrations with pertinent steps in flap dissection, anatomical nomenclature and long-term outcomes are also demonstrated. For each flap a detailed discussion of key papers concerning its origin, pitfalls, technical refinements and tips for success are also included. Thanks to specific notes on common reconstructive challenges and complications, this book offers a valuable reference tool and would be unquestionably an integral reference guide for every surgeon interested in reconstructive microsurgical techniques, especially during their early microsurgical career.
Colorectal Surgery, second edition, is the essential guide for general surgical trainees preparing for the FRCS examination, as well as a quick-reference for clinicians working in the field. Providing a concise and evidence-based overview of colorectal surgery, this resource covers the diagnosis, management, and treatment of colorectal conditions. Extensively updated to reflect recent innovations in surgical practice, this edition covers new topics such as robotic surgery, complete mesocolic excision, capsule colonoscopy, and the role of qFIT in lower GI investigations. The oncology and inflammatory bowel disease chapters have been revised to reflect new understanding of the genetic aspects of IBD as well as novel therapeutic agents. Management of benign colorectal disease has also been revised to reflect current approaches to rectal prolapse and haemorrhoidal disease including updated guidelines for functional bowel conditions.
This book is a first-of-its-kind unique atlas that synthesizes a full review of both upper and lower extremity reconstructive options in one text. While there are books that concentrate on local soft tissue coverage and other books that discuss all types of free flaps, this book features a full scope and provides the full spectrum of reconstructive options. It features high-quality pictures and made-just-for-this-text illustrations created by reconstructive surgeons with intimate knowledge of the procedures. This atlas includes a detailed description of each flap and presents high-quality pictures and graphics explaining relevant anatomy. Each chapter offers case presentations accompanied by explanations that describe why doctors select specific reconstructive options; this guides the readers on how to discern which flap to choose in which situation. Comprehensive Atlas of Upper and Lower Extremity: From Primary Closure to Free Tissue Transfer offers a comprehensive tool for plastic surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, and some general surgeons who perform simple soft tissue coverage.

A point-of-care guide for internal medicine trainees. When students and residents begin a new rotation in internal medicine, they often start from scratch, relying on their own research to prepare for consultations. What questions are crucial during history taking? What should the physical examination and investigations focus on? What should the consultation write-up include? Now, physician learners can turn to Vancouver Notes for Internal Medicine for guidance on conducting consultations in each of the core internal medicine subspecialties. Vancouver Notes provides learners with an organized approach to common presentations in internal medicine. For each subspecialty, it lays out the process for identifying key information and communicating findings and management recommendations to a patient’s health-care team. Developed through the efforts of more than 90 resident physicians and faculty members at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver Notes combines valuable clinical pearls in a single, accessible resource to give students and residents the tools they need to succeed from day one.
The fourth edition of this highly successful textbook discusses the practical applications of the various methods of regional anaesthesia, including ultrasound, as well as giving an account of their theoretical aspects. The well-established author team use their experience to provide a practical and stimulating book which reflects everyday clinical activity, supplemented by high definition ultrasound images and schematic diagrams. The book will also discuss the place of regional anaesthesia in current medical practice, particularly with regard to pain processes, ultrasound imaging, and patient outcomes. Regional anaesthesia is a rapidly expanding sub-speciality of anaesthesia: routine provision of long-lasting pain relief and the introduction of real-time ultrasound block has fuelled a demand for cadaver and ultrasound-based anatomy training courses. Thus, it is more important than ever to have a thorough grounding in this exciting subspecialty.
