This is a tale of Turkish history and customs mixed with violent
crime. Istanbul's detective inspector Cetin Ikmen is called to a
cistern deep beneath the city where treasure hunters have
discovered the body of a teenage girl, Hatice Ipek. Before her
death, she had been dressed like an Ottoman princess in an
elaborate satin garment decorated with tiny roses. She had also
been sexually abused. However, it soon becomes clear that the girl
was no innocent and that she could have fallen into the hands of
organized criminals who sell 'Turkish delights' to important
people, some in high office, who would not want their sexual
predilections known. But before Ikmen gets very far with the
investigation of this brutal crime, he is pulled off the case. The
wife of a famous Turkish movie star has been kidnapped and Ikmen's
superiors deem this to be more urgent. Hikmet Sivas, a young boy
from Istanbul, made his name in Hollywood in the 1960s. But could
the Mafiosi have had a hand in his rapid and somewhat mysterious
rise to stardom? Could this have any bearing on the kidnapping of
his wife? Ikmen soon begins to see connections between the two
cases, but there are secrets which people on both sides of the law
seem intent on keeping undercover. Pressure is put upon the
detective to lay off. But Ikmen has to know the truth, if only to
keep his promise of justice to Hatice Ipek's mother. This is a
fascinating and original mystery story with lots of vivid local
colour and some intriguing characters - the most human yet
idiosyncratic of them all being Cetin Ikmen himself. (Kirkus UK)
The body of a teenage girl is discovered in a cistern deep below
the city of Istanbul. For the Turkish police force's most talented
officer, Inspector Cetin Ikmen, this is a difficult case. The girl
was his daughter's friend and her attire, that of a
nineteenth-century Ottoman, offers no easy explanation. With his
promise of justice to the dead girl's mother still fresh on his
lips, Ikmen is suddenly taken off the case and reassigned to the
kidnapping of an ageing movie star's wife. The star is hiding
something and so, Ikmen fears, are his superiors. A powerful secret
exists in the labyrinthine city; one which those on either side of
the law will do anything to prevent surfacing...
