An ugly beggar woman asked the young prince for shelter one night. The prince was heartless and he dismissed her. Suddenly, the ugly beggar changed into a beautiful enchantress. Since she had seen that the prince had no love in his heart, she cursed him by transforming him into an ugly beast. The curse can only be broken if, before his 21st Birthday, he truly loves a woman and has her love in return. This must happen before the last petal falls from the rose, which the enchantress gave him, or the beast will remain hideous for all time.
The Beast sees himself as so ugly that he doesn't believe any woman will ever love him. In his sadness, he is violent and cruel, until he falls in love with Belle.
