This title profiles all known dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures,
from the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous eras and beyond,
including fish, mammals, reptiles, pterosaurs, plesiosaurs,
ichthyosaurs, amphibians, crocodiles, turtles and birds. It
includes more than 2000 illustrations, maps and anatomical
diagrams, with every entry detailing appearance, activities,
habitat and life cycle. This is a ground-breaking and expert study
by a leading paleantologist and geologist. This seminal book covers
every important dinosaur find. A comprehensive introduction
explains the evolution of the dinosaurs, their adaptation,
specialization, habitats and locations. The main section is an
encyclopedia of 1000 dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures. Entries
give size and shape, muscle and bone structure, plus explanations
of how the animal moved, hunted and defended itself. Each main
entry has a highly detailed and technically accurate illustration,
and a map showing the sites where fossils have been found. With its
unique combination of the latest expert research and visual
reconstruction, this is an essential reference for school and home
study.

Great reference and guide

This is a well designed book. It has a broad scope covering the entire span of geology during which the tetra-pods evolved. The book begins with a well illustrated - everything is full colour - explanation of concepts relating to paleontology and some informative descriptions and illustrations of different ecosystems. That is just the first sixty pages! The rest of the book is set out like a field guide. This section begins with the Devonian amphibians and progresses through each era to the descent of hominids by which time the reader has navigated five hundred pages.
I have been involved in some paleontology field work recovering vertebrate fossils from the Permian period. I must say this book is extremely informative and packed with comprehensive scientific information. Each animal type that is described is also illustrated in colour. All the major vertebrate groups are covered. So this is not a dinosaur book, it really provides a good understanding of how amphibians diversified and evolved into reptiles and then into the two great vertebrate groups, the dinosaurs and birds on one side and the mammals on the other.
